I worked at Mississippi State University full-time (More than 3 years)

    Pros

Relaxed atmosphere. My department was pretty relaxed on time off and “longer than an hour” lunch breaks. As long as you get your job done, they don’t care how you work. Great benefits and retirement. Campus is beautiful and a treat to enjoy on nice days, biking, running or hammocking. Meet new employees from different departments all the time. Always an event to take part in.

    Cons

Pay could be better. Politics and political correction is prevalent in just about any university campus. Traffic on campus is awful sometimes.

    Advice to Management

I didn’t have any issues with management. They were professional and easy to talk to.

I have been working at Mississippi State University part-time

    Pros

Convenient between classes, not too hard, professional development

    Cons

Low pay, clear favoritism, not always fair, not always concerned about employees, communication is not always great

    Advice to Management

Try to be more consistent. Sometimes this job is great, but some days are terrible. There needs to be more concern for employees in my opinion. There is no clear avenue for job performance evaluation, which is really important to students. Consider employees needs, and be more consistent in how you treat employees day-to-day. Try to be more fair and take employees needs into consideration.

I have been working at Mississippi State University full-time

    Pros

You will serve some great students and meet some really good colleagues. If you are into football then you definitely will have something to do. There are opportunities for professional development available.

    Cons

Location is not made for single individuals, but great for couples and family oriented, pay is ok but not the best and politics of being at a large, land grant, phd granting institution can be a little taxing.

    Advice to Management

Human Resources could use a revamp. They would be going in the right direction if they worked on having a total rewards department within HR that could provide faculty and staff with discounts and opportunities to enjoy the surrounding area.

    Pros

Starkville is an international place, though in Mississippi...

    Cons

Far from big cites, the students are half of the population here

    Advice to Management

Put less emphasis on Football and more on academics
