I have been working at Missouri Department of Elementary and Secondary ED full-time (More than 5 years)

    Pros

They spent a long time on training and encourage questions. The environment is relaxed and work is independent.

    Cons

The work load fluctuates. There is some downtime, which can be good or bad. Pay is not performance based so there is little incentive to go above and beyond. They haven't increased the pay much in a very long time, despite cost of living increases.

    Pros

The freedom to work independently while helping clients with a wide range of disabilities keeps the job interesting and challenging. Training that is specific to the job is frequently provided and it includes the Continuing Education Units that are required to maintain my counseling license. The current District Supervisor is supportive, encouraging, and unbiased in his leadership style. The District Supervisor and other colleagues provide collaboration with difficult cases.

    Cons

Success is measured solely by the number of clients who have obtained employment however a multitude of variables are out of the out of the realm of the counselor's ability to affect their outcomes.

    Advice to Management

People work most effectively in environments that are supportive, encouraging, and unbiased. Some competition is healthy and productive. However when success is measured through a single component, competion between some individuals increases and adversity in the work environment increases.
