I have been working at Missouri State Highway Patrol full-time (More than 10 years)

    Pros

I like what I'm doing, I stay busy, and it is challengung work. I like working with the public, and helping out.

    Cons

The hours are terrible. We have a rotating schedule, that changes weekly, headquarters does nothing to support the different troops, and their not open to new ideas.

    Advice to Management

We need more people, more money, and better hours.

I worked at Missouri State Highway Patrol full-time (More than 5 years)

    Pros

    Independent Work Freedom.
    Take Home Car.
Good Initial Training. Just enough to get you into trouble when you hit the road.
There are some good people working there.
Retirement salary is good if you've been promoted over the years.

    Cons

    Salary Is Terrible.
Budget Is Tied to General Revenue, so your salary is last in line.
No Right to have Collective Bargaining. Just an Association, which is meaningless.
You probably won't be hired anyway, count yourself lucky.
You have to live in the county you work. No pay adjustments.
You have to move to get a promotion unless your a golden boy.
No height or weight standards anymore. Separate Physical Training standards for male and female. This is for allowing Women to join so they can be politically correct.
If you ask to leave or take time off, forget about ever coming back. They get their feelings hurt if you use them for a stepping stone. They even tell you that.
After your initial training, forget about learning or training, except the worthless CEU's that they make you take to cover their rears and meet current standards.
You are at the mercy of civilian decision makers.
Raises are far and few between and you better be happy to get a crumb.
    You better be politically correct.
After 5 years you'll hit a wall and wish you had done something else.
Oh, and did I mention, you'll be the 2nd lowest form of scum to all the liberals.
You are required to spend a lot of money out of your paycheck, making it even less.
No healthcare paid for after retirement.
I could go on and on, but you get the point.
And here is the the kicker..... Are you ready?
If you are a screw up, you get promoted, if you kiss their rears.
    Enjoy.

    Advice to Management

To the worthless working there, you know who you are.
    Quit.

I worked at Missouri State Highway Patrol full-time (More than 8 years)

    Pros

Fancy taxpayer-funded toys to catch speeders with helicopters, planes and such.

    Cons

    Too many to list.

    Advice to Management

Build robots to collect revenue for the state and do away with number collecting.

I worked at Missouri State Highway Patrol full-time (More than 3 years)

    Pros

Great benefits and insurance and retirement. Lots of great people. Very understanding supervisors. Very family like environment.

    Cons

Hard to be accepted by long term employees. Can be very demanding at times. Also sometimes stressful and hard to tell what others think of you. Pay is the biggest factor.

    Advice to Management

Civilian employees or non-members need an increase in pay.

    Pros

Worked there for 5 years. My co-workers were hard working and enjoyable to be around which is a necessity for a team setting. While I worked there a major overhaul occurred, Ford's Crown Victoria was to be replace. This meant a myriad of design and equipment changes and additional deadlines. Sure there were a few hiccups, but I believe my co-workers performed gracefully under the added stress.

    Cons

I assume typical government bureaucracy... There were a couple cases of "the higher ups want this so we got it for them."

I have been working at Missouri State Highway Patrol full-time (More than 5 years)

    Pros

I have enjoyed working for the Highway Patrol. Obviously there are office politics but that goes for every office I've worked in.

    Cons

The pay scale is not adequate unless you are a Trooper (I'm not).

    Advice to Management

Find a way to get rid of the problem employees.

    Pros

Very professional organization that has high integrity and great training...I would highly recommend The Missouri State Highway Patrol to anyone looking for an exciting career.

    Cons

Starting pay is a little low compared to similar jobs. You might have to travel more than 40 miles to and from work which can get costly when gas prices are high.

I worked at Missouri State Highway Patrol full-time (Less than a year)

    Pros

    Your days off accrue quickly

    Cons

Work schedule is horrible, no week is like the other, and the hours are a jumbled mess. Quick typing skills are a MUST! You aren't told this during your 8 weeks in Jefferson City where you must also past so extremely hard State and Federal tests along with HAZMAT tests. Pay is very low for the knowledge and skills you must retain. There is a Very Strong line between those who wear brown and those who wear blue uniforms. The running saying that was passed around at the academy was if it's blue it's true, if it's brown flush it down. When you get to your first assignment this becomes glaringly obvious. Was taught very sternly to treat every trucker as a liar and that they are guilty until they prove otherwise.

    Advice to Management

    Clean house. Period.
