I have been working at Missouri University of Science and Technology full-time (More than 10 years)

    Pros

Offers good environment to work, benefits, diversity. You get to be a part of the educational experience. Meeting faculty and students and learning about different cultures. To see the excitement of students when you make the smallest effort like saying Hello or baking cookies and sharing with them! It's a great feeling.

    Cons

The challenges working at a university is learning what all of the acronyms stand for and understanding how they are used. Depending on what department you work in, there are times when it is extremely busy and stressful. The University system struggles to balance the budget each year due to state cutbacks and sometimes positions are cut.

    Advice to Management

Need to be more transparent in sharing university issues with faculty, staff and students. To some degree the upper administration is getting better at doing this especially in the budget area.

    Disapproves of CEO

I have been working at Missouri University of Science and Technology full-time (More than 5 years)

    Pros

I can feel less pressure for due date, and colleagues are very friendly. Very good retirement plan and 17 days of vacation days and 1 sick day will be added every month.

    Cons

I have to say that the salary is relative low. But living cost is also low, so you can manage it.

I have been working at Missouri University of Science and Technology full-time (More than 8 years)

    Pros

One of the only employers in the area. Great community atmosphere and feeling like you are part of the university spirit. Some areas have wonderful people and its nice working with all the students. If you apply yourself and are willing to learn multiple skills, you can move within the organization.

    Cons

Your experience as a staff member is completely related to what department you work for. There is no true overall rules and regulations keeping supervisors from running their departments as they wish. Each department is like its own mini workplace, so it all depends where you go. Some areas are wonderful and have amazing supervisors, creating a great work environment; others are absolutely horrible due to poor management.

    Advice to Management

Like many organizations they are too upper administration top heavy. There needs to be some enforcement and/or accountability to those that are notable poor management and have high staff turn over.
Stop the overall devaluing of staff employees. Yes, students and faculty are important; but without staff the organization couldn't operate. Value ALL your people.
