I worked at Mizkan (Less than a year)

    Pros

Friendly employees and management, ability to get involved with the company if you wish to do so, no micromanagement, and flexibility in regards to their employee's personal and family lives.

    Cons

Contractors and temps can be made to feel like outsiders even though they are contributing just as much to the company. There also seems to be a disconnect from what contractors/temps are told by their agencies versus what actual business practices are on site.

    Advice to Management

Try to be more proactive in involving all employees in the building in meetings and events. Be sure to follow through on statements and promises made during the interview process as well.

    Pros

Most of the people are nice, easy to work with, friendly.

    Cons

HR sucks! They lie to you about your PTO during the hiring process. They only offer 2 weeks vacation when almost all other companies offer 3 weeks. They take forever to deposit your 401k contribution to your account. They don't care! They act with a small-company mentality.

    Advice to Management

Get real HR professionals. The ones you have will dive away the talented workers.

Former Employee - Marketing in Chicago, IL

    Pros

    Location - major metro area.

    Cons

too risk averse; influenced by the Japanese culture. Unless someone retires, chances of one getting promoted are slim to none. Not a good place to advance your marketing career. Good for beginners, since you can get fundamentals.

    Advice to Management

Don't pretend to be a big corporation. Small companies have their advantages as well; namely, flexibility that you lose by trying to emulate big corporations. Try to motivate people with what's relevant. Using "one size fits all" approach is old school.

    Positive Outlook

    I worked at Mizkan full-time

    Pros

    Some very kind, hardworking people

    Cons

Deeply ingrained office politics, vicious corporate culture, very low morale, underdeveloped business practices and lack of training/information/support, under acquisition that most employees are VERY unhappy about which filters into everything during your daily interactions, high crisis level from poor planning and last-minute fire drills, unreasonable expectations that lead to inevitable failure, huge divide between executives and support staff with much grumbling and complaining, majority of employees are lazy and spend more time gossiping than working.

    Advice to Management

Get your house in order or you will lose more good people like me who refuse to spend their days in this type of mess.
