I have been working at Modern Woodmen full-time (More than 5 years)

    Pros

There is great leadership in the company, but specifically at the Indiana Firm. Training of new advisors is very much 1 on 1. They only hire a select few financial advisors each year, this allows them to commit the necessary resources to ensure that each new hire is successful.
Compensation is healthy. You truly in charge of your own business and given plenty of flexibility. Many of the best products in the industry.

    Cons

If you do not have an entrepreneurial and philanthropic heart, Modern Woodmen is not for you. If you don't want to be in control of your income and independence, Modern Woodmen is not right for you.

    Advice to Management

Continue to only hire a few people each year. Continue the high level of support that you provide.

I have been working at Modern Woodmen full-time (More than 10 years)

    Pros

MWA sincerely cares about their employees as much as they do their members. It is very much a family atmosphere even though it is a large organization. Servant leadership just isn't a thing, it is engrained in the culture and a part of everyday life.

    Cons

It is still a conservative financial institution and it has it's quirks, i.e. dress code, breaks, rules. However, things are changing and a breath of fresh air is emerging.

    Advice to Management

Don't forget who we are and what we stand for.

I have been working at Modern Woodmen full-time (Less than a year)

    Pros

Total independence, fraternal network, awesome support. When you do well, the benefits to the job are great.

    Cons

Have to come up with your own clients, but that's about it in terms of on the job cons. You have to account for dips in income by not maximizing your enjoyment during good months.

    Advice to Management

Keep up the good work, I love working here. Although there are cons to the system, the benefits outweigh them overall.

Great benefits, including a pension. Strong support from the home office. Unlimited potential for compensation and advancement. Community-oriented because they are a nonprofit fraternal company.

This type of career, in general, requires that you either have a network of people to turn into clients or can quickly build such a network.

I have been working at Modern Woodmen full-time

    Pros

The thing that sets this company apart from other financial services companies is the Fraternal aspect. They are owned by their members and function as a not-for-profit company in order to give back millions to local communities every year. The income potential is only limited by one's commitment to consistently connect with new people and truly help them reach their financial goals. Unlike similar companies I've worked for in the past, the home office is extremely supportive and the company expects me to do only "what is in the best interest of the client", not what pays the highest commission. They do put their members/clients interests before their own.

    Cons

I've noticed that others list "lack of a lead system" as one of the cons. These must be people who have not worked in this field before. The reality is that the nature of this business is building a personal market through networking, referrals, and becoming an advisor who people will recommend to others. There actually is a lead system that can be tapped into through the fraternal activities and existing client households. This job is not for everyone. You must be able to get out of your comfort zone, engage others, and create the opportunity to meet with them.

    Advice to Management

Tell new recruits up front what their challenges will be in finding new clients. Most recruits with good people skills will be able to handle this, but be sure to identify the ones who won't.
