I have been working at Modern Woodmen full-time (More than 10 years)

    Pros

MWA sincerely cares about their employees as much as they do their members. It is very much a family atmosphere even though it is a large organization. Servant leadership just isn't a thing, it is engrained in the culture and a part of everyday life.

    Cons

It is still a conservative financial institution and it has it's quirks, i.e. dress code, breaks, rules. However, things are changing and a breath of fresh air is emerging.

    Advice to Management

Don't forget who we are and what we stand for.

-Excellent training program to prepare yourself to be on your own
-Great office environment and everyone is willing to help you succeed
    -Make your own schedule

    Cons

-No base pay so income fluctuates
-Money you earn can be lost due to clients being declined or deciding to not go through with their plan
-If you aren't on top of things your business will get behind and you will be unsuccessful
-Not being local to the office can hurt you because you are not around everyone and learning daily

    Advice to Management

I think management is doing a great job. They tell it to you straight and don't sugarcoat anything. They are very supportive and are willing to do anything they can to help you.

    Pros

Excellent health benefits. They encourage you to continue your education by paying for LOMA courses. They also give you personal time off, vacation, and sick leave. They are involved with the community and make efforts to build relationships.

    Cons

While it is an insurance company, it is somewhat of a stuffy atmosphere and cliquey for people. The dress code is a bit too intense.

I have been working at Modern Woodmen as a contractor (Less than a year)

    Pros

I am not contracted with Modern Woodmen yet, but am very close to it. First off, in the Irvine region, the training and support is unparalleled. The managers are incredible, with an amazing work ethic and support system. They have put a lot of effort into training the new agents, even before they are officially contracted with the company. They also won't hire just anyone, and have a long-term investment in their new agents when they do. You can't beat the benefits of superior health insurance, matching IRA contributions, BDA allowances and monthly bonuses (which you have to earn).

    Cons

I would say the only con is that Modern Woodmen could have a few more products in their life insurance products lineup, or at least a few more options of what you can do with those policies. I understand that Modern Woodmen is a very conservative company with a commitment to keeping the amount of assets high, but it sure would be nice to have more to offer to my clients.

    Advice to Management

The management is unparalleled in their commitment to training and building a superior team of agents. Keep it up!

I have been working at Modern Woodmen full-time (More than 10 years)

    Pros

Fraternal Company, Good Training for New Representatives, Very Good Corporate Citizen, Supports Representatives Giving Back to Community, Defined Benefit Plan Funded by Company, Excellent Medical & Dental Plans, 401K

    Cons

Not as much support for seasoned representatives...more focused on newer reps, Relatively low commission rates compared to industry however benefits are good, Annual "Incentive" trip is basically a glorified sales meeting usually in a great location but the time is filled with meetings.

    Advice to Management

Recognize that established reps need support too, Reduce amount of time spent in meetings at annual conference or stop making reps qualify, Promoting as many Regional Directors as possible doesn't make sense...they aren't the ones producing. Reduce the number of management in the field and increase agent compensation/bonus.

I worked at Modern Woodmen as a contractor (More than 10 years)

    Pros

Excellent reputation in communities. Meaningful Fraternal benefits to members.

    Cons

Not always competitive on premium rates and product selection.

    Advice to Management

Less focus on management and more focus on the sales force. Too many Regions that produce next to nothing for the company. Resources allocated to Regional Managers do not directly impact or benefit sales force. Reduce # of Regions and use those funds to support agents through better HO service, and admin assistance in Managing Partner's offices.
