I have been working at Modular Mining Systems full-time (More than 10 years)

    Pros

I've worked here for 15 years; it's consistently challenging and active, and the people are great. There's a lot to learn, and in almost every role there's room for creativity and innovation.

Work hours are dramatically better than your average start-up, hours range from 7:30 - 4:30 to 9:00 - 6:00.

Cost of living in Tucson is very low compared to tech centers in California. It's a nice city to live in.

    Cons

It's a smaller company, so advancement opportunities can be a bit more rare than in larger companies. Still, opportunities are there -- Modular has the flexibility to create new roles to suit the people available.

We seem perpetually understaffed, but the company was forced to lay off a quite a few people in the early 2000's, which they've worked hard to avoid doing again. This means that adding on extra surge capacity is usually done via contractors, so that core employees are not affected in the downturns. It can be a struggle keeping up with the volume of work.

Support roles require an after-hours support phone.

    Advice to Management

Staff up before the economic upswing starts in earnest, not after.

Keep in mind that every new technology we introduce into our products requires most of Product Development, Global Support and regional support to become trained up on using that technology; it can certainly be done, but should only be done when the benefit is higher than the cost.

I worked at Modular Mining Systems full-time (More than 5 years)

    Pros

    -Opportunity for international travel.
    -Mostly friendly coworkers.

    Cons

This company was started by a group of innovative people over 35 years ago who developed a successful product which became the standard in the industry. These people have long been gone and the remaining leadership has slowly been squandering away the advantages the company once thrived on. Product development efforts are usually a big disappointment and often joked about internally. Subsequent attempts to pawn the resulting faulty products off on the customers are borderline unethical. Recent plans to reinvigorate the company through restructuring have mostly resulted in more chaos. The management team has a strong “good old boys” club feel to it and people that shouldn't be there remain due to this. The proof is in the results which is consistently declining market share and demotivated employees. If you just need a paycheck and don't mind dealing with the circus environment, this company might work for you in the short term. Otherwise, it might be a good idea to go somewhere that isn't on the decline.

    Advice to Management

Komatsu would be wise to shake this company up and bring in fresh management.

I have been working at Modular Mining Systems full-time (More than 8 years)

    Pros

Modular has many excellant employees, technology and a wide range of mining applications in globally diverse locations. There is a lot of variety and the work environment is generally positive and cooperative.

    Cons

Many technical personnel are promoted to managers with little aptitude or training, especially in employee development. Product development is burdened by excessive and frequently changing processes.

    Advice to Management

Empower your employees. There is a lack of authority and accountability below the VP level which leads to late or incomplete project completion.

    Pros

Modular Mining Systems is a little big company in a little big town. Despite our overall size of 700 people globally, we all seem like a large family in a friendly, casual office environment. Although the very vertical job titles, everyone seems to work on a rather horizontal work platform on the technical side.

    Cons

The common hardships of being a global company; having development resources scattered throughout the globe means working together as a team can be challenging. Connecting with technology is key to advancing technology.

    Advice to Management

Stay attune to the market, visit customers regularly and fully understand the environment, problem statements and user stories our products are developed to solve.

I have been working at Modular Mining Systems full-time (Less than a year)

    Pros

Very interesting job as well as very smart and interesting people working there. The cultural diversity in the company is amazing, you get to meet talented and smart people from all over the world. The ability to travel can be a good thing as well as the ability to expand your knowledge and visit mines. Days off and holidays are okay.

    Cons

Although the job and software they deal with is very interesting, it is also very limited to the mining fleet management software industry, which is also very limited to few companies.
The pay is a bit low and the PTO is shared with your sick time off.

    Advice to Management

Compensation could e increased a little bit and I would invest a little more in the documentation and organization of that documentation of the products.

I have been working at Modular Mining Systems full-time (More than 5 years)

    Pros

Many opportunities to explore if you are willing to travel or get as much technical as you want. Decent benefits. Good people.

    Cons

Some not good technicians turned into bad managers. Low salary range for high level of performance expected. Poor H.R.

    Advice to Management

Don't expect an average salary range to maintain or attract world class employees. Internal departments need clear definition of responsibilities.

I have been working at Modular Mining Systems full-time (More than 3 years)

    Pros

    Pay is OK
    People are nice
Travel to different site is nice
Ability to keep reward miles is a definite plus

    Cons

    PTO is not good
Forcing personnel to take 4 days at Christmas is not fair, especially to non-Christians
Medical insurance has gone down hill each year for the past 3 years
You are either on the "in" crowd or not

    Advice to Management

Look for the high performers, not those who are "yes" people.
Look at peoples past experience, and utilize people in areas that they are experienced.
Trust the opinion of experts, and not those who have been with the company a long tim.
