    "Company with great potential"

    No opinion of CEO

I worked at Molecular Devices full-time

    Pros

Good products and talent. Issues are dealt with by searching for a root cause rather than a scapegoat. Current implementation of DBS is on the right track - thoughtfully applied. Metrics provide visibility into how departments are doing early so that course corrections can be made.

    Cons

Disfunction at the executive level is holding back this company. Too many decisions are made in conference rooms rather than working with those close to issue. Too many legacy products rather than focusing on those with the highest potential.

    Advice to Management

Address the hard issues, find common ground, and challenge each other to achieve the targets that matter. Engage directly with team members to learn what is and isn't working and ask for suggestions on how things can be done better.

    Pros

Really good co-workers, and everyone tries to work together to get it right. Data is king here. Lot of opportunities to develop

    Cons

There are a lot of internal politics. There are a lot of meetings, and tons of constant compliance training, and proper resourcing is a constant issue.

    Pros

None None None None None (had to put 5 words in for pros section)

    Cons

Everything about this company is wrong. Work-life balance does not exist. Favoritism plays a big role in advancement. Employees are stretched thin. Profit margins on products are terrible especially at the end of the quarter. Always in the red unless there is no demand.

    Advice to Management

Stay where you are because we don't want you anywhere else

I worked at Molecular Devices full-time

    Pros

Can't think of much other than the location which is south bay close to other great companies like Google, LinkedIn etc. But that is the "only" pro believe me.

    Cons

Where to start? You are supposed to deliver from day 1 of your job because they have something called daily management and as part of that there are weekly stand ups where they go over KPIs. If the numbers are not good people start pointing fingers at each other which continues in front of VPs and they do nothing. In fact this culture is promoted at Molecular Devices and people who are best at pointing fingers and blaming others for their failures rise the corporate ladder quickly. Seriously all the management cares about are people who can talk - meaning put the blame on others for not making their numbers. There are some people who talk, talk, talk in front of the VPs and CEOs and they are considered star performers just because "they are confident enough to talk in a big forum" in the words of my manager. Can you believe it? And the managers of these "star performers" treat their work as examples to share with the rest of the teams no matter how good or bad it is in terms of performance.
Also favoritism is rampant here. Relatives can work together on the same project.
People from bigger companies are hired only to be siloed by other employees who feel threatened and insecure in the presence of better talent.
