I worked at Molecular Devices full-time (More than 3 years)

    Pros

You can learn a lot and take on a great deal of responsibility.
    Strong process improvement focus.
Very data driven and focused on results.

    Cons

Some departments have limited growth opportunities.
Several recent layoffs and organizational changes - unclear what the future of the business looks like.

    Advice to Management

Figure out the key priorities and focus on those. There isn't enough cooperation at the top of the business, with different leaders pulling in different directions

    Pros

Great people to work with. Fast paced environment that gave high performers a chance at rising up the cahin

    Cons

Leadership led by fear a little too much but not overly. Less structure in some areas that a company of that size should have.

    Advice to Management

Make sure processes are in place and documented. Then make sure those documents are actually used.

I have been working at Molecular Devices full-time

    Pros

Focused DH owner. Hard to see much more pros for the moment. Used to be a lot more inspiring feeling part of a team instead just part of a machine...

    Cons

Well as just said company become an efficient machine but lost lots of its soul at the same time. The team spirit and drive has been lost in many ways. Lots of knowhow and experience lost last couple of years as they do not manage to keep instrument/support specialists knowledge gets more and more diluted...

    Advice to Management

Get back to the track where people used to feel like a team and it just a replaceable part in a machinery...

    Pros

Was a great place, until revenue became #1 priority in 2010. Great scientists, engineers and business folks prior to 2010.

    Cons

Now all they care about is delivering cash from former good business to parent company to avoid being sold. Pay attention to your customers more than maintaining your personal salary.

    Advice to Management

Sell the company to someone that cares about your customers rather than just caring about your short term Revenue Stream to keep your high paying jobs.

I have been working at Molecular Devices full-time (More than a year)

    Pros

A winning environment. People are talented and work well together in most departments. The company invests in fun social events to cultivate teamwork and relationships. I've been at other life sciences companies and the management is focused on results and career development and are active in getting out to meet employees. I feel like they care. The DBS tools are tough to learn, but do make a real difference in results. Good communication and a lot of investment in time to communicate the strategy and vision to the employees while asking for feedback for improvements...makes me feel part of the team and that I can make a difference.

    Cons

Not a lifestyle company. The work is challenging, but the ability to learn and grow is the best I've ever seen

    Advice to Management

Keep communicating and update the employees like you are doing. I and others really appreciate it.

    Pros

Great people. Exposure to many different challenges. Environment reflects a strong desire to grow and development. Challenges have faced the business in the past but the leadership team worked through them thoughtfully and respectfully.

    Cons

Danaher drives a very hardworking culture. While nobody ever tells you to work long hours, you do because there is always so much to do and the employees want the business to do well.

    Advice to Management

Spend more time talking about what is important to employees- work life balance and a strong healthy business future.

I have been working at Molecular Devices full-time (More than a year)

    Pros

MD is a fun and exciting place to work. The company is struggling to invigorate growth given a portfolio of declining products negating the impacts of the high growth lines. Many of the people are a joy to work with as is most management. The work is challenging and the workload is heavy but the experience is rewarding and being at a Danaher company is a great resume booster.

    Cons

Resources are always constrained but management seems to accept at face value that PDV is fully engaged and therefore new product development is very slow. It is demotivating to see poor performance rewarded, particularly when it takes away rewards (bonus, salary) from good performers.

    Advice to Management

Take care of the strong performers. If you don't you'll find they're the ones leaving. Silicon Valley is highly competitive, you cannot keep underpaying people and expect them to stay. Relying on Radford is a mistake. Glassdoor has better salary info, and job postings. The good ones will leave leaving you with the poor performers who can't get a job so easily.
