I have been working at MongoDB full-time (More than a year)

    Pros

This place is exploding in all the right ways, rapid-rapid-rapid growth from both customers and headcount. I've been at start ups, and massive multi-billion dollar public companies and have never seen movement like this. Major issue when I got here was differentiation between open source vs commercial, although now there is a clear path to the value of the commercial version.

    Cons

It's intense here, if you aren't down for the ride... don't come here. Long hours, extensive training, 100% accountability. If you aren't doing your job, or keeping up with the pace they expect - it's time to go. That can be intimidating for some, but motivation for others. It can be exhausting at times but the financial reward is out of this world.

    Advice to Management

Keep bringing in A players, don't expand so fast you end up with B's and C's.

I have been working at MongoDB full-time (More than a year)

    Pros

There are a lot of smart people, lunch provided 2x per week, strong financial backing. Trying to position ourselves in the market as a disruptor.

    Cons

Upper management does not care about their employees. Everyone is disposable, and there has been a rotating cast of characters over the last year+, especially as it relates to the sales team. The politics here trump everything else, and many do not see eye to eye with the long term vision. Unrealistic goals set for sales, hard to make numbers unless you have a "good patch". It is unfortunate that there seems to be the notion that you can make a great living here, as those days seem to be long gone.

    Advice to Management

Listen to your employees, really listen. It is not difficult to be respectful and allow the underlings to have voices here. There needs to be a serious change in how people think and communicate with one another.

I worked at MongoDB full-time (Less than a year)

    Pros

MongoDB's technology is second to none. Work atmosphere (Austin Office) was a lot of fun. Great people working there. The Austin Office makes sure they have office events to ensure everyone is engaged. Loved attending those!

    Cons

Headcount vs quota is out of whack. The product is free, and trying to get someone to pay for something they have been using for years is pretty tough. Especially, when there is really not a functional change between the free version versus the enterprise version. Sure, there are some advantages for paying for it, but not enough advantages for MongoDB's asking price. They also scaled up sales fast, without understanding the financial trade off of having reps not hitting their number.

    Advice to Management

Sales Leadership needs to be sincere. Stop using the scare tactic, and having the mentality of it is my way or no way. Pay attention to the amount of top sales talent you have churning. World Class Sales Organizations do not have that amount of churn.

    Pros

Great solution with humongous positive business impact for end customers and amazing skilled solutions architects.

    Cons

Senior sales people are not treated with respect.
People's private lives and inner well being are not as important as pumping up the pipeline.
Spamming their customers through stealthy/ spooky sales tools, which many of the customers (your most important assets) do not appreciate and in certain countries has even been prohibited by law!
Senior sales people are not solely being used for senior activities but more importantly for Pipeline Generation and cold calling/ - qualifying and manual spam list building with.
Bullying and management by fear BS strategy.

    Advice to Management

Stop micro managing and bullying your amazing sales force. Be more authentic, honest, predictable, fair and motivational......

I worked at MongoDB full-time (More than a year)

    Pros

Everyone wants to hear about the company and the technology, interest is incredible and the technology can actually deliver.

    Cons

Huge turnover, no consideration for remote employees and no trust either. Your report is more important than your actions. People can be rude to each other.
Also, there's very few differentiators in the commercial version. The conversion rate is extremely low, so targets are tough to achieve.

    Advice to Management

You are behaving like Larry Ellison, not sure you'll have his success. You'll surely get the hate though.

Technology is awesome. Very smart people - I feel like I learn something new every day. Visionary leadership to take company to the next level.

    Cons

There has been a lot of change recently, and not everyone views this positively. People tend to be 100% bought in or not happy.

    Advice to Management

Keep driving toward the vision of being the best open source company in the world!

    Pros

Some really great people and a promising technology but terrible execution on the technical side of things and tons of pressure on the sales side.

    Cons

If you are in sales and just want to collect a paycheck for your base salary, this is your place to work! I have never worked in a company that did not post stack rankings of the sales reps. Why would MongoDB do this? Because no one is making quota except a handful of people in New York who cover startups. The enterprise reps are making nothing and turnover is super high. Engineering is super dysfunctional. I work now for another open source company with half the number of people in engineering as MongoDB that gets twice the amount of work done. It is not that MongoDB doesn't have great people in engineering, they just don't know how to empower them and let them run.

    Advice to Management

Go the the board and admit that winning the enterprise is going to take two more years and you want to pay people to do the tough ground work in the field. You can be a big player in the future if you stop beating up the sales force and start paying them.

I have been working at MongoDB full-time (Less than a year)

    Pros

    - CEO & CRO are 100% committed to building a salesforce that is as much a competitive advantage as the MongoDB technology. They have done it before at BladeLogic and for a few years at BMC so have a track record of success in this area.

    - Virtually impossible to find another company that is growing this fast and operating in this big a market ($35B market) where you can still get in on the ground floor of the "sales execution" phase of the company.

    - The new sales leadership is committed to our development and proving that on a daily basis. I'm learning things that will not just help me sell more MongoDB but will also stick with me for the rest of my career (Champion building/testing, MEDDPICC, Value Framework, etc.)

    - Performance based culture that pays a premium for over achievement.

    - Although MongoDB is growing so fast, there is still a commitment to only hire "A players" and not compromise...even if it means certain territories remain uncovered

    - Very talented Sales Engineering team, always feel like I have the best technical team vs. my competition

    Cons

    - It's a good problem to have but can be a challenge, at times customers have already decided to purchase MongoDB before I have had a chance to engage with them, therefore making it challenging to forecast timing & amount accurately

    Advice to Management

    - Continue to invest in the development of the salesforce and do not compromise on your commitment to only hire "A players"

I have been working at MongoDB full-time (More than a year)

    Pros

The company has gone through a lot of change over the past year, and it was warranted. The technical team and product are amazing, but the company was not managed well and it showed. Over the last few months there has been a clear change and now decisions are made far more quickly. It appears that a lot of the weaker performers in Sales have either left or have been let go, along with people who had bad attitudes or just didn't belong. The new CEO seems to is building a new executive team that is bringing more energy and focus to the company. There is also genuine enthusiasm around the new product along with the opportunities ahead, and the company is again investing for growth.

    Cons

This is a performance based culture. If you are not comfortable with this then this is not the company for you.
Engineering and Sales don't really spend a lot of time together. Needs more cohesion.

    Advice to Management

More communications on plans and priorities
Bridge the gaps between engineering and sales
