I have been working at Monrovia Nursery full-time

    Pros

It's a equal opportunity company that give you many options on creating a good career. You have many job positions that help you grow and it has good benefits.

    Cons

The only downside is you have to be able to handle the weather in all conditions, if you don't like the outdoors that much, it is not for you.

    Advice to Management

Talk to workers more often, so they better understand their role in the growing of the company.

I have been working at Monrovia Nursery full-time (More than a year)

    Pros

The scenery is beautiful and the hours are reasonable. They do offer some overtime

    Cons

Poor quality plants that are overwatered all the time. As a scout, you have to deal with this poor quality and poor irrigation on a regular basis. Poor benefits and pay. Many safety issues thar are ignored by management. would definitely not work here if you want to be appreciated.

    Advice to Management

I would focus more on safety issues and in fixing cultural issues in your plants. Be more open to new ideas and quit degrading lower level employees.

    Pros

Fast Paced Work Environment that exposes employees to a vast array of duties
Good Incentive Based Pay Escalation for those who are Aggressive Salespeople

    Cons

A very political environment. Internal Competition amongst all Sales people is encouraged.
Limited vision and follow through from Upper Management.
A culture akin to that of a fraternity

    Pros

    A lot of quality people

    Cons

Inability to define and implement consistent and best practices

    Advice to Management

Promote within. Base personnel decisions on proven record, instead of the personal dislikes of an inexperienced and egotistical CFO

I worked at Monrovia Nursery full-time (More than 10 years)

    Pros

Great pay, good hours. You get to look at beautiful plants.

    Cons

Plants too expensive, upper management doesn't listen. Low inventory. Constantly changing protocols.

    Advice to Management

Get the lawyer out of there! Let plant people lead the company. Get back to introducing new plants. Monrovia used to be the leader, but now suffers.

    Pros

Showing initiative isn't looked down on. There was always something new to do and you were able to take on new tasks if they interested you.

    Cons

Little room for growth. It was difficult to maintain quality of work because of constantly changing scope

    Advice to Management

Listen to your employees, even if they aren't management they have too insight as to what works and what doesn't.

I have been working at Monrovia Nursery full-time (Less than a year)

    Pros

Working at a company with a mission to make the North American landscape more beautiful, one plant at a time, is incredible. It beats working in healthcare, entertainment, etc. It's a family-owned business which has its pros and cons. You feel like family, but the benefits are not that great because a number of business decisions seem emotional or unfocused.

    Cons

The benefits are crap. You don't start accumulating vacation time until six months after your start, at which point you only get 5 days. After one year of employment, you get two weeks, but it takes forever (3 hours/pay check) to accumulate said time. There is NO 401k match from the company. The CEO (relative of company founder) drives a luxury car and has a home in Paris, but doesn't seem to care about his employee's retirement goals. It's very frustrating. I don't participate in the healthcare benefits because I am on my spouse's so I can't speak to those.

    Advice to Management

Develop more incentive for employees to stay with the company.

    Cons

    Advice to Management
