I worked at Monrovia Nursery full-time (More than 8 years)

    Pros

I worked for this fine company for almost 9 full years as the IT Systems Administrator for the Dayton Oregon facility. I never really fully appreciated the place until I was gone. But what I appreciated more than anything is the business and management education I got along with my regular college education. The place has been invaluable to me in terms of business and life lessons. Met a great group of people I miss daily. A lot of these reviews are from very negative people, this at the end of the day is a agriculture company, and ag companies usually do not pay the top rates in the country.

I never knew I had a green thumb until I worked there. Now my garden is amazing and my landscape skills are quite improved.

They get you what you need, and never once did I feel like I was working for a sinking ship. If anything the ship was restructuring just so it could fire on all cylinders! Miles is a great guy, great CEO, he would listen to the littlest of people, and I did feel that he was genuine in his listening and mentoring to employees. The GM of Dayton's site is a great guy. A quiet guy with great business acumen that always led the Oregon team to great things.

If you go into the job with passion they will take care of you.

    Miss them a lot.

    Cons

The day I left I had no regrets, had no negativity in me. I guess I could say better interoffice training on how you work with different cultures. The cultural divide between office staff and field staff are always going to be there, but helping bridge that divide and talking about it rather than not would improve many things.

    Advice to Management

    Just communicate better.

    Pros

Solid company. Honestly cares for it’s employees. Decent benefits, pay is reasonable. There is always room for advancement.

    Cons

Pay is a little low for office positions. Vacation time is too low. Old-school in terms of office environment.

    Advice to Management

Increase vacation time and create a better working environment in the office.

I worked at Monrovia Nursery full-time (More than 10 years)

    Pros

Great pay, good hours. You get to look at beautiful plants.

    Cons

Plants too expensive, upper management doesn't listen. Low inventory. Constantly changing protocols.

    Advice to Management

Get the lawyer out of there! Let plant people lead the company. Get back to introducing new plants. Monrovia used to be the leader, but now suffers.

    Pros

Showing initiative isn't looked down on. There was always something new to do and you were able to take on new tasks if they interested you.

    Cons

Little room for growth. It was difficult to maintain quality of work because of constantly changing scope

    Advice to Management

Listen to your employees, even if they aren't management they have too insight as to what works and what doesn't.

I have been working at Monrovia Nursery full-time (More than a year)

    Pros

The scenery is beautiful and the hours are reasonable. They do offer some overtime

    Cons

Poor quality plants that are overwatered all the time. As a scout, you have to deal with this poor quality and poor irrigation on a regular basis. Poor benefits and pay. Many safety issues thar are ignored by management. would definitely not work here if you want to be appreciated.

    Advice to Management

I would focus more on safety issues and in fixing cultural issues in your plants. Be more open to new ideas and quit degrading lower level employees.

    Pros

It's a equal opportunity company that give you many options on creating a good career. You have many job positions that help you grow and it has good benefits.

    Cons

The only downside is you have to be able to handle the weather in all conditions, if you don't like the outdoors that much, it is not for you.

    Advice to Management

Talk to workers more often, so they better understand their role in the growing of the company.
