    Pros

In this metro area, for the time being at least, this is the "gold standard" employer as far as pay and benefits. If you work well in a "matrix" organization and have a great deal of education you would be hard pressed to do better.

    Cons

All rewards are basically based on how much secondary education you have and how many times you change roles. This leaves employees who prefer to be "pros in position" and "subject matter experts" not only not being rewarded for their contributions in overall compensation but cleaning up after the people who come into a role and leave. Additionally, numerous people end us ananagers with no business whatsoever in thise positions. Case in point, new manager in my department has had over 90% turnover in 18 months, me included.

    Advice to Management

Stop using matrix reporting structure. It is not now, nor has it ever been, effective. Reward people for the jobs they do, not how many different things they can get their fingers into.

I worked at Monsanto Company as a contractor (More than 3 years)

    Pros

Some pros to working at Monsanto as a contractor are that you are one of many (over half the company is contract workers) so you are treated fairly similar to employees. Prior to the transition to managed services in the IT department, the atmosphere was great and collaborative. Toward the end of my tenure (shortly after the transition) the morale was very low and productivity took a nosedive. I still enjoyed my job there for the most part and my leadership team was always very encouraging.

    Cons

Well, I mentioned the transition to managed services. While the transition was in progress when I left, I did not see too much of a positive outcome, but then again, what transition to managed services ever goes smoothly? Monsanto undoubtedly will go through some pains while the process is adopted by the users and the new contractors learn their jobs.

    Advice to Management

I hope that good talent is still recognized as it was before and that they see chances to reward those that are working hard to maintain a positive attitude in the face of adversity. I wish them all luck as I truly enjoyed my job there and hope that others can enjoy their time there as well.

I worked at Monsanto Company as a contractor (More than 10 years)

    Pros

Great people. Interesting technology. Flexible hours and scheduling.

    Cons

Company in decline. Management lacks expertise in their core businesses. Opportunity very limited. Inbred culture. Planning, foresight, organization, and discipline poor. Reactive. Key businesses at risk.

    Advice to Management

Determine what your key businesses are and commit to them, including the resources and hard work necessary to succeed. Quit trying to find the easy way out.

I have been working at Monsanto Company as a contractor (Less than a year)

    Pros

Amazing colleagues with lots of experience who are still willing to explain things to less-senior people. Chance to work with a wide variety of people.

    Cons

Worries about buyout make people nervous about future employment prospects. Overtime must be pre-approved. Tricky to get software access when onboarding.

    Advice to Management

Be more generous in offering direct employee positions. There are many contractors who would love to work directly for the company and who would make loyal employees.

I have been working at Monsanto Company (More than 3 years)

    Pros

Great family centric environment. Cares about your safety. Flexible hours.

    Cons

Incompetent upper management. Currently they are going to outsource most of our IT because they only care about the bottom dollar. Thousands are losing their jobs.

    Advice to Management

Get to know the people that actually DO the work. Understand their challenges. Innovation is great but if you don't hire enough people to take on the daily operations then your teams are stuck keeping the lights on.
