I worked at Montgomery College part-time (More than a year)

    Pros

    * Relative autonomy with curriculum. Can choose your own textbook or not have one at all.
    * Very supportive administration within the computer instruction department.
    * Most students are hard working and want to be there.
    * Night time hours for my courses make it easier to teach after my day job.
    * School looking into allowing remote and online teaching.

    Cons

    * Dealing with academic dishonesty can be stressful, but thankfully adjuncts have the support of administrators.
    * Having to teach in person at the Rockville campus is difficult especially when commuting during rush hour.
    * Class enrollment is unpredictable. Classes get cancelled when there aren't enough enrollees. You can't really depend on adjunct work for steady pay.
    * Very low pay, about half of what full-time professors make on a per course basis.
    * Classroom lab computers get reset every night. It makes it hard to install tools you need for class. Those steps have to be done at the beginning of every class.
    * Parking enforcement is very inconsiderate of when instructors need to park but a parking pass has not arrived.
    * Most classrooms have a lack of dry erase markers available for the whiteboards.

    Advice to Management

Make adjunct pay more in line with what professors make on a per course basis

I have been working at Montgomery College part-time (More than 5 years)

    Pros

It is a very ethnically diverse environment. This school is open to all people from all walks of life. In my seven years there, I have met many kind and supportive colleagues and students. For the most part, there is a working system in place that will address potential part-time faculty issues. There is an SEIU (part-time faculty union) as well as a PT faculty institute that hears any complaints about the system.

    Cons

The pay is low although it is known to be higher than what other similar institutions would pay its adjunct faculty. I have worked for years there and have been promoted to the highest rank that a PT faculty could be, and I was still only paid $25 per hour (I started at $18) after taxes. That does not include the work that teachers have to take home with them! The worst thing is that PT employees have to wait up to four weeks to get paid at the start of the fall semester. This is criminal, but upper management do not really want to work on doing this in a more timely manner. They always come up with an excuse such as the "software being used by the payroll office needs upgrading, and we need another semester to find funding for that." Please note that you are only allowed ONE day of paid leave each semester. Anything more is deducted from your paycheck regardless of the reason.

    Advice to Management

The design of MC management system is too "top-heavy", almost like a corporate system. Those who hold executive positions are paid top-dollar incomes, as in 6-figures, while the adjunct faculty that keep the school operations going and comprise the majority of the teaching population, are stiffed every semester. Please do something about this: we don't teach your students for free! You don't pay for our credit card interest and late fees when you don't pay us on a timely manner. Please be more considerate of our plight, or else the exodus of competent teachers will continue.
