    I have been working at Montreat College full-time

    Pros

    Montreat College is an independent, Christ-centered, liberal arts institution that educates students through intellectual inquiry, spiritual formation, and preparation for calling and career. Supportive administration, from the Board of Trustees on down. Caring, genuine faculty and staff. All employees truly believe in the mission of the college and want to honor Christ. Record freshmen enrollment for the past two years. New and growing programs. I have witnessed transparancy and true servant leadership. Emphasis on changes and programs that will provide greater success for students.

    Cons

    All members of administration have been on board less than 3 years due to a failed merger several years ago. They have new ideas and, as can often be the case, a small faction of the faculty are resistant to change. This creates some tension.

    Advice to Management

    Keep listening as you have! Keep serving the Lord and Montreat College. Stand firm.

    Pros

    There is nothing I value more than knowing I can trust the administration I work under. I have built a very strong relationship and community with them. I know, without a doubt, that I can count on them. The administration cares about the well being of faculty, staff, and students. They go above and beyond the call of duty to ensure that needs are met. They live their spiritual belief in the open and practice what they preach. They look out for the well being and welfare of the school. Montreat College has a vision for the school that these administrators seek to carry out. They are the epitome of "humility, trust, relationships, effectiveness, sense of urgency, belief, and extraordinary commitment." The college thrives since new administration have been welcomed.

    Cons

    This is not considered a con, but more as advice: Ephesians 6:5: 'Obey your earthly masters with respect and fear, and with sincerity of heart, just as you would obey Christ.'

    Advice to Management

    Keep up the good work. You are doing God's work and you are appreciated for it.

    I have been working at Montreat College full-time (More than 10 years)

    Pros

    The faculty is generally caring and helpful to one another. The setting is nice.

    Cons

    The management speaks of trust and relationship, but struggles to live this out in daily lives. Their totalitarian leadership style makes it difficult to work effectively. Faculty is treated as if they have no ideas or no history at the place, and that the college only is great bc of the new administration.

    The managements singular view on the bible and almost all decisions makes for no compromise. Faculty that have been there for 20-30 years are continually being treated rudely. While, the college was failing financially before faculty were at least talked to kindly. Certain faculty are targeted by the management, and their lives are made miserable. While others that agree with decisions are left alone.

    Students have reported major issues and problems and they are told that they will not be solved. Money seems to be the driving issue of the majority of these decisions.

    Admissions feels like they have to let in all students otherwise they will be fired. Transcripts of students are not always verified.

    Advice to Management

    It is time to listen to faculty, students, and admissions staff.

    Pros

    The faculty is truly committed to their students and consistently try to encourage diversity of thought. They seek to prepare students to find their calling and be able to perform their jobs with excellence and integrity.

    Cons

    Members of the leadership team lack vision and are not able to create working environments that allow for innovative solutions or the free flow of ideas. The President of the college has been able to lead a great turnaround on the traditional campus, but members of his senior leadership team lack the confidence to challenge ideas and come up with different solutions to current problems. There's an unhealthy desire to please the person above them rather than collaborate or share ideas that sometimes might be at odds with the "boss" which compounds mistakes and many times aggravates the problems faced by the college. That pressure is passed down to the junior and entry level employees who usually end up targeted and singled out for not meeting performance standards. Employees are encouraged to contribute ideas and to handle conflict internally. However, when issues are brought up there's usually some form of retaliation, disguised as campus wide meetings or faculty meetings. Employees do not feel safe bringing up issues to their supervisors many times because the toxic culture is created from the highest level of administrations. (VP Level etc...)

    Students, particularly in the adult programs are viewed as sources of revenue rather than individuals with needs for education and guidance. There are no advancement programs, internship placement programs or opportunities for continued education. Feedback or constructive criticism is usually met with "that's the way we've always done it" Efforts to solve problems usually involve throwing money at a solution which creates wasteful spending since the problems stem from poor leadership and fractured processes.

    Very limited opportunities for growth. The President has done a great job of laying out expectations for employment at Montreat college, many times calling coming to Montreat college a "resume buster" so it is important to point out that Montreat college will not be a springboard to the next big thing. There's an expectation laid out that Montreat college will not provide outside opportunities, but it was never discussed that Montreat will not provide internal advancement opportunities, has a high turnover ration, and it could potentially hurt your career and derail your financial security. Rather than examine current hiring practices and improve the selection process, many times it will be said that the employee simply didn't fit the school or couldn't handle the work. There's a lack of professional development that is concerning.

    Advice to Management

    Montreat College has already gone through a tough financial time. The current environment is similar to that which created the financial crisis initially. The working environment and lack of transparency will continue to create a revolving door of employees. I would encourage management to ask this question, if one of your graduates told you they are looking to work at a company with a high turnover ratio, little to no opportunities for advancement with a lack of diversity of thought and no support from senior level management and consistently operates in conflict of its vision and mission statement, would you encourage that student to pursue that job? That's Montreat at the moment. It can be much more but it begins with fresh, innovative, diverse, confident servant leaders.

    Pros

    Excellent campus learning experience and faith based approach.

    Cons

    In 2010 the upper management was too focused on money and not focused enough on quality. One campus suffered from serious reverse racism.

    Advice to Management

    Use direct supervisor assessments instead of computerized systems to evaluate management and stop trying to be politically correct.
