I worked at Morgan Stanley full-time (More than a year)

    Pros

    - Competitive salary
    - Great people
    - Interesting projects to work on

    Cons

    - Crippling bureaucracy
    - Office politics
    - Upper management with short term vision only
    - Completely wasted talents on time consuming but ultimately trivial projects, having PhDs do left joins for client-facing salespeople instead of giving them the time to develop powerful, useful tools that use cutting edge models and technology

    Advice to Management

    - Be honest to potential hires: the tasks promised (fintech tool development) were nowhere close to the actual tasks (basic database manipulations that should have been automated eons ago)
    - Having any longer term vision than the next end of month or quarter would improve processes immensely

I worked at Morgan Stanley as a contractor (More than 3 years)

    Pros

Complex architecture and challenging business logic.

    Cons

To much politic. It`s often very hard for scrum members to have access to end user to get clear requirements. Information controlled by insecure senior manager preventing effective and optimal solution development in an agile way.

This is not a work environment where you will have the change to try new technology. The tech stack is relatively outdated caused by the very heavy proprietary structure to maintain. Senior manager often prefer known old solution to open source ideas not yet approved by the firm.

Many projects needs a lot of production support making new development often very challenging.

    Advice to Management

The management structure is way too heavy. From the developer to the managing directory there can often be up to 4 peoples. I would invite the director to cut the long chain of command that adds very little value and spend more time understanding the day to day job of developers, there challenges, frustration and motivation.

I have been working at Morgan Stanley full-time (More than 8 years)

    Pros

    Career management
    Work-life-balance (especially for a bank)
    Competitive salary and benefits
    Good people
    Great open culture

    Cons

    Slow moving/regulatory driven
Political - can be hard to navigate at times especially for those without the will or intuition

    Advice to Management

People first; we do a good job but we need to do better

I have been working at Morgan Stanley (Less than a year)

    Pros

Challenging environment. Work with quants, strats, financial engineers, and other software engineers on a daily basis. This job had me learn finance (like really master some concepts that are crucial in the Fintech industry).

    Cons

It's a perspective really, If you like a mix of technology and finance this would be idea. Don't advice for those who want super techy stacks on there resume.

I have been working at Morgan Stanley full-time (More than a year)

    Pros

Salary is the only good thing since they know no one will stay in this place if they don't pay well

    Cons

Too much politics at all the levels, they don't want intelligent loyal people but rather someone who does what they ask without complaining, it's more important to come to office on time than completing the work. If you are working for this firm be prepared to be laid off for no reason or rather for doing the right thing .

    Advice to Management

Please provide some management training for the managers rather than promoting them purely for the relationship they build with their managers, there are very few good managers who deserve to hold that position.

I worked at Morgan Stanley full-time (More than a year)

    Pros

Good pay, good perks, great insurance, nice offices with lounge, located at the heart of the Old Montreal. Easy access to VPN and no-laptop hassle.

    Cons

Terribly "banking" style. Despite being the SW development team we worked with the pressure of everything that goes wrong with people's money. The work is never done, more bugfix than new projects, lots of legacy, lots of stress. It is fast-paced and you better like that.

Not easy to apply for internal transfer, despite the process being in place.

I worked at Morgan Stanley full-time (More than 3 years)

    Pros

    1. Brand name is good, and also a powerful bank.
    2. Training opportunity in New York, where you can systematically learn a lot of technologies.
    3. You have the opportunity to work with smart people and embrace new technologies.
    4. Their IT infrastructure is the best I have seen so far.

    Cons

    1. Salary of trainees barely aligned with market average.
    2. If you unfortunately work in team that sits far far away in the back office (almost no interaction with front desk), and you are more comfortable with coding rather than talking/managing, your annual salary increase and compensation might be small, or barely match inflation rate. One year may be okay. But if you stay there for a few years, you will find yourself significantly underpaid, compared to your peers hired from the market who do the same daily job as yours.
    3. Workload and responsibility is too much for the salary they pay.
    4. As with all large companies, bureaucracy is everywhere. You have to make your performance visible to MD+ level to get your effort somewhat appreciated.

    Advice to Management

Please, ensure the salary of people with similar experience at least comparable, regardless when they were hired.

Fast paced, you need to one top of things . Really good benefits, salary is decent, you need to negotiate for your compensation. People are very nice and fun to work with.

    Cons

Typical banking culture, political issues in almost every corner. Bureaucratic hurtles are ever-present Too many meetings.
