I have been working at Morgan Stanley full-time (More than 8 years)

    Pros

Come in, do your job, go home. Hours are reasonable (8:30-6), so this place is good for people with children who want to go home to their wife.

    Cons

Slow promotions, tiny bonuses, little opportunity for advancement. But I was working in commodities, which is nearly closed (whole sub-departments are sold off or shut down).

    Advice to Management

Raise salary or stop expecting the best talented people. Provide clear growth paths to your personnel - it's not at all obvious what needs to be done to gain promotions. And coffee with some MD for 15 minutes with 20 people doesn't help.

    Pros

Ok place to be. Good environment. People respectful. Always changing. Generally there are opportunities to move up or around if you are able to navigate or elbow your way.

    Cons

As above, always changing. Need to be tied to revenues closely if you seek high pay - which makes sense. Otherwise don't expect a lot of big increases

    Advice to Management

More forthcoming with business strategy and a clearer definition of what goals are and how success is defined. More through job of scanning organization for existing top talent.

    Cons

Should provide specialized training courses available to all employees
    Reverse commute to Purchase, NY
    Minimal pay raise and bonuses

I have been working at Morgan Stanley full-time (More than 5 years)

    Pros

Senior management team is excellent. There is alot of mobility if you work hard and go after it.

    Cons

    Compensation is not very competitive.

    Advice to Management

It's not 2009 anymore, you need to provide better financial incentive.

I have been working at Morgan Stanley full-time (More than 3 years)

    Pros

Morgan Stanley went through some tough times during the financial crisis, as did the rest of the industry. With the joint venture behind them it really feels like the company is gaining momentum and heading in a positive direction. The work environment is positive and the people are great.

    Cons

Morgan Stanley might pay on the lower end (not really sure because I am just relying on hearsay). People always tell me I would be making more money if I left the firm but in my experience the grass is always greener on the other side.

    Pros

Career advancement opportunities, benefits are good, too bad they discontinued the ESPP (again, because of the JV)

    Cons

Compensation is not as good as other companies on the street

  7. "Great FICC capital markets starting ground for first 3-5 yrs. Freedom to advance in sales or trading."

    Pros

Opportunity to take your career in any direction you want within capital markets. There's a seat for every product with real front office responsibility and experience.
Great launching pad to land a more specialized role with higher pay once you figure out your career goals.
Work life balance and great people to work with
Take care of their people with comp and benefits

    Cons

Retail focus... second in line to institutional business
Paid 20% below street (but still paid well)
Management turning desk into agency business and a lot of red tape

    Advice to Management

    Be more transparent with employees
    Better pay based on merit
Don't roll over into an agency desk
