I have been working at Morgan Stanley full-time (More than 5 years)

    Pros

Onsite gym and cafeteria. Generally talented younger staff.

    Cons

Extremely poor raises for those that hang around a few years early in their careers (those that leave after 2-3 years made the best decision)

    Advice to Management

Teach those in manager roles how to actually manage. Their typically people that are very good at their jobs, but doesn't mean they know how to handle having a team under them.

I worked at Morgan Stanley (More than 5 years)

    Pros

Smart people, challenging work, great opportunities if you're in the right place and have the right people championing you, great benefits.

    Cons

Very competitive - watch yourself on that ladder you're climbing or you'll get trampled. And if you don't have someone senior watching out for/helping you, you'll go nowhere fast. Frequent changes in management cause frequent changes in direction. In the 8 years I was there, we had 8 department heads. Hard to gain traction or retain consistent support for your work. Work/life balance is hard to achieve.

    Advice to Management

Listen to employees, really listen to what they have to say; then act on it. It goes a long way to creating employees who feel valued and want to stay at the firm.

I have been working at Morgan Stanley full-time

    Pros

It is a job that pays a salary.
You can work as hard as you want.

    Cons

Some areas have an inner circle, good luck breaking into it.
Management is extremely weak or non-existent.
Enough of the Town Halls. They are used by Senior Management for self promotion.
    Culture is non-existent.

    Advice to Management

Bring back John Mack, or bring in someone with a personality.
    Senior Management is weak.
A great short if you are a shareholder

I have been working at Morgan Stanley full-time (More than 8 years)

    Pros

Come in, do your job, go home. Hours are reasonable (8:30-6), so this place is good for people with children who want to go home to their wife.

    Cons

Slow promotions, tiny bonuses, little opportunity for advancement. But I was working in commodities, which is nearly closed (whole sub-departments are sold off or shut down).

    Advice to Management

Raise salary or stop expecting the best talented people. Provide clear growth paths to your personnel - it's not at all obvious what needs to be done to gain promotions. And coffee with some MD for 15 minutes with 20 people doesn't help.

    - Promotion Opportunities
    - Talented Staff

    Pros

Ok place to be. Good environment. People respectful. Always changing. Generally there are opportunities to move up or around if you are able to navigate or elbow your way.

    Cons

As above, always changing. Need to be tied to revenues closely if you seek high pay - which makes sense. Otherwise don't expect a lot of big increases

    Advice to Management

More forthcoming with business strategy and a clearer definition of what goals are and how success is defined. More through job of scanning organization for existing top talent.

I worked at Morgan Stanley full-time (More than 3 years)

    Pros

    The people I worked with.

    Cons

Morgan Stanley created a new company so they could deny benefits to people and still call it "Morgan Stanley". I think out of 20, many there are 2 people left. Everyone else quit or got another job. Low morale, low pay. They had a dinky van they charged us $400 a month, you read it right, from our paychecks, for us that were coming from NYC. I quit as soon as I got the bonus.

    Pros

Morgan Stanley is committed to diversity. They are very supportive of developing new careers. Access to senior management. Will help and encourage you to get involved in locally to "give back." An outstanding brand. A company you are proud to work for.

    Cons

Not a Con- But setting expectations: New employees (especially those out of college) need to be prepared to work their way up the ladder. If you expect to come in and be treated like a Managing Director with direct access to the CEO, you will be dissapointed (And you are maybe a bit dillusional).

    Advice to Management

    Keep up the good work.
