I worked at Morgans Hotel Group full-time (Less than a year)

    Pros

    -Great pay
-Cool perks, especially if visiting one of their sister hotels
    -Trendy, upbeat environment
    -Some celebrity sightings
-Chances to move up or switch positions if you pass probation
-Some of the hotel guests are amazing and you are encouraged to be friendly and socialize with them
-Time flies because there is always so much to do. A great job if you are good at multitasking.

    Cons

This position isn't for a nice person. To fit in with the staff, you have to be edgy and caustic in your manner and speech. Be prepared to hear vulgar jokes, profanity, or to be gossiped about and you better not tell on anyone there because it will bite you in the butt. Rude, unfriendly, catty behavior is the norm here.

-You are encouraged to profile people who come in. Its understandable, especially since the hotel is located in the Tenderloin and attracts a lot of shady people. But there are people that come in who may not look like your typical hipster or businessman and they are profiled. It would make me not want to ever return if I were a guest or patron.

-Limited but ongoing trainings but you really have to catch on fast. You will not last if you're the kind of person who takes notes or asks a question more than once.

-You have to improvise on the spot at times. There will be times when no one is available to assist you and you have a line full of angry guests. You have to use "common sense" to make everyone happy but the wrong common sense will get you written up.

-Be prepared to work around the clock sometimes; you may work an overnight shift but have to come in at noon for a staff meeting, then work that same night.

    Advice to Management

Check in more with your staff (especially new staff) to make sure that they are feeling good about their employment there. Enforce stricter policies on tolerating violence (violent language), drugs, and bigoted language in the workplace.

I worked at Morgans Hotel Group full-time (More than a year)

    Pros

Co-workers are very friendly and helpful.

    Cons

A real divide amongst departments like no other hotel I've been with. There is no communication-often times it feels like they are separate companies (i.e. sales, front office, HR, food and bev all seem to work separately not together) They seem to use the "work for us now as a lower position and we'll move you up in 6 months"trick with everyone when hiring. Most people don't move up at all, others it takes years. They expect you to take a step sideways or even back for them and they won't keep up their end of the bargain.

Mid Level Management is horrible. They are not active on the floor and most are not approachable. Because of the purchase many things property level have slowed down-computers are dated, supplies are always running low. Back of house is absolutely disgusting.

    Advice to Management

It could be possible to salvage your hotels, but you need to rebuild your culture. Make sure you follow through with your promises (especially those on paper) and unify your properties.

    Pros

Cutting-edge and innovational. Compensation is higher than most competitors, including good benefits, 401K match and yearly bonuses.

    Cons

New management around 2012 implemented too many changes, including having entire staff memorize a several sentence credo. The size of the company, about 10 hotels for the past 15 years, has prevented managers to excel and progress to greater positions and responsibilities.

    Advice to Management

Lack of company growth has caused career-minded managers to leave in order to get to the next level.
