I worked at Morrison Child and Family Services full-time for more than a year

    Pros

-Awesome mission and ideas for helping children who really need it -Lots of trainings -Health care is pretty good

    Cons

-I was never taken seriously by management and when I had concerns about ethics in the workplace -When I helped report another employee for EXTREMELY unethical behavior, they just laid him off and he can still work with kids and file for unemployment -Little to no support for employees, which in turn causes more stress and makes it harder to do a successful job -Little trust between management and staff, for example...

    Advice to Management

Take better care of your employees. It's stressful work and it doesn't help when management and HR doesn't support. It's an organization for kids and it's non-profit! Also don't cover up bad employees and unethical situations. Again your supposed to support kids who need advocates and voices and that's not going to happen if you're not supporting the employees who work with them.

I worked at Morrison Child and Family Services full-time

    Pros

For being a nonprofit, the pay is decent.

    Cons

Proper communication is very difficult. The organization is big and at the mercy of many rules that paralyze rather than facilitate its staff.

    Advice to Management

Grow slower. Take on less, do what you are doing in a more organized way.

      Negative Outlook

I have been working at Morrison Child and Family Services full-time for more than 3 years

      Pros

Wonderful dedicated line staff and lower ranking employees. Some very dedicated managers and directors. Great cause.

      Cons

Some leaders are not experienced in their area and it shows in their performance. Serious distrust by staff in leaders. CAO is a liability and violates confidentiality daily AND is a high-conflict personality so she creates conflict and destroys morale and productivity. Leaders hire and promote unqualified people, lay off high-functioning staff and refuse to promote staff who have proven successes. They prefer new (unqualified)...

      Advice to Management

Fire CAO. Do exit interviews with staff and ask "why did you start looking for a new job" then listen to the answer and make necessary changes. Stop protecting friends and egos and do what is right for the kids of Morrison. Actually PRACTICE the Sanctuary Model.

I have been working at Morrison Child and Family Services

      Pros

-Decent benefits: CommunityCare health plan through HealthNet for Employee Only is free. This plan has access to most area hospital networks, including Providence, Legacy and Adventist. Not OHSU, however. PPO health plan also offered at about $55/month, includes OHSU and virtually all area hospitals. Dental benefits through The Standard, offers $1000 and $2000 deductibles. -Co-workers are usually what people say they...

      Cons

-Poor leadership and planning: A program recently was notified that it would be shut down, but that did not stop them from creating several positions and filling them even when they knew it would be shutting its doors. -Supervisors and managers are sparingly held accountable for their actions and behavior (i.e. Morrison does not check in with staff on a regular basis on how the management team conducts itself). -Jobs...

      Advice to Management

-Acknowledge staffs', specifically line-staffs', hard-work with more than just an e-mail saying "thanks" or the annual Employee Appreciation Event. Sit down and tell them what they are doing well and thank them for putting up with the stresses that come with being line-staff. There are already enough meetings discussing what employees are doing poorly. -More creative solutions before closing (or opening) programs. Instead...

I have been working at Morrison Child and Family Services full-time for more than a year

      Pros

-Lots of training -Working for an organization that helps kids and families -Stepping stone for those that want to break into the non-profit sector without having prior experience or limited experience.

      Cons

-No check and balances for managers -Poor work culture -Employees are treated like they're disposable -High stress environment, low pay -Poor health insurance (almost better to have none at all) -No incentives or recognition

      Advice to Management

1.) Invest in your employees; paying a living wage means a lower turn-over rate, higher job satisfaction, boosts morale & work culture, and saves the organization money over time. 2) Make your employees feel valued and supported. 3.) Respect your employee's right to set a boundary with their work load and don't guilt trip them or say that they're not a "team player" or that it's okay to exploit them given the state...
