Great Company in the Construction Industry

May 22, 2017 - Project Engineer I in Milwaukee, WI
    Recommend
    CEO Approval
    Business Outlook

    Pros

    - Great salary and benefits - Awesome people and fun events regularly - Great place to come right out of college - Long work weeks are compensated with generous vacation time

    Cons

    - Work-life balance is a struggle; you must work on this at an individual level for many years - Middle management isn't always the most capable; promoting before ready for the advancement - Expect many long work weeks throughout a project

    Pros

Lots of very smart and talented people. Clear lineage of future leaders to carry the company forward.

    Cons

There is an inside track that if your not on, it’s hard to break in.

Good choice if you are looking for pay & stability - but not high on the fun meter

Aug 1, 2015 - Senior Estimator in Kirkland, WA

    Business Outlook

    Pros

Established, financially secure company with favorable industry recognition. Benefits and pay are above average. Projects are interesting, challenging, and occasionally include landmark facilities such as stadiums, universities, civic structures etc. Very structured operations (if that is your thing). Geographically diverse (if your willing to relocate for career advancement opportunities). Some very well respected construction professionals, both locally and in corporation operations.

    Cons

One thing that differentiated my tenure at Mortenson from my current employer is that there seemed to be a highly competitive (at times cut-throat) atmosphere that tended to breed a lot of 'people drama' and unneeded stress. Couple this with a management philosophy that fosters 'high level thinkers' and you start to see signs of dysfunction with an imbalance between 'strategists/thinkers' and 'doers'. If you are like most people and find reward in hard (tangible) work and being in integral part of a team, expect to encounter some frustration. There is also an unusually high level of management oversight and controls. This could be viewed as a good thing in the fact that management is highly involved in all levels of decision making (thus individual accountability is limited), but can be frustrating if you like autonomy or are looking for rapid career advancement, or just need to get something out the door to a client. Trying to procure the simplest items for day to day operations involves an extremely involved corporate process. Controls/software/hardware was antiquated, but improvements were coming. Soft perks cycled with margins, but compared to my current employer, were somewhat limited.

    Toxic culture runs top down

    Mar 18, 2022 - Quality Manager
    Recommend
    CEO Approval
    Business Outlook

    Pros

Hire diverse. Pay is decent. Occasionally given good opportunities. Some sites are less toxic than others. When I started, my first site was very good. I got recognition for my hard work although many of the issues i listed below were present. My third site was OK. Some sites are safe.

    Cons

Women are rarely given the same opportunities even when earned . Sexual harassment claims usually result in victim being displaced. Safety is only given lip service. Disrespectful behavior is allowed. Pay raises, promotions and positions are given based on relationships (friends, family, romantic). Reviews are rarely given and they have a 'policy' that on a scale of 1-5, no one is supposed to get above a 3 on any category of their review. Transparency is almost nonexistent. Ethical complaints are not acted upon within the company. Certain ethnicities are treated badly. Retaliating is common against those who vocalize issues. Blacklisting extremely common. Accountability and recognition rarely happens. Quite a few manipulators at the top. Some people have a job because they give higher ups money to get that job.

Good Company, Good People, Good Paychecks

    Feb 3, 2015 -

    Business Outlook

    Pros

Plenty of passionate people at Mortenson, plenty of room for growth, and great benefits for the most part. If you're willing to travel for certain groups there is a great living stipend. Plenty of smart people to help you grow and plenty of opportunity to choose a path. Management actually cares and gets to know you.

    Cons

Typical long hours, high stress for a job. Not a big heads up on where the next project destination is but that's part of the travel package. Can feel like a number at times, being caught up in the shuffle.
