I have been working at Mother Jones Magazine full-time (More than 10 years)

    Pros

Smart, passionate colleagues, great benefits, good pay (especially in the nonprofit and/or media space), and real opportunities for growth if you work smart and work hard. Plus you're working for an organization doing good in the world.

    Cons

Lack of resources on the business/tech side of things is understandable since editorial is the focus of the organization but it does mean staff are overtaxed, less can be accomplished, and work suffers due to burnout related turnover and lack of institutional knowledge.

    Advice to Management

Invest in the systems and people that do the work behind the scenes.

I worked at Mother Jones Magazine full-time (More than a year)

    Pros

An inspiring place to work, I really loved my coworkers, the product and felt like I was constantly learning new things. While I can only speak from experience regarding one department, they are pretty good about transitioning interns to full-time staff and moving hardworking low-level staff into better positions - there were a lot of long-time staff when I was there, which I generally take as a good sign in a company (means good pay and upward mobility).

    Cons

I realized that I hate being in Admin, not necessarily because of the company but just that wasn't the right role for me. If another position had opened, I would have stayed but I'm much happier working on policy and program management. Also, my last year was NOT 2011, it was 2009 but that wasn't an option.

I worked at Mother Jones Magazine as an intern (More than a year)

    Pros

learn a lot about the reporting and editing process. fun and stimulating atmosphere and coworkers. interesting subject matter to work on. unlimited opportunities to blog and pitch stories.

    Cons

lacks diversity in general, and therefore lacks diversity in perspectives and world views - though generally everyone is very intelligent and open-minded.
not much opportunity available to stick around after fellowship program ends.

    Pros

The mission of MoJo is a noble and necessary one: fearless investigative reporting to promote a more just and democratic world. And the organization practices what it preaches. Everyone is very conscious of supporting and promoting work/life balance and in treating one another with honor and respect. This is a nonprofit organization and a union shop. Although salaries tend to be a little lower than the for-profit corporate world, the soft benefits are many and varied. Most importantly, the dog-eat-dog competitiveness and outright greed and selfishness one finds in many for-profit companies don't exist here. People are recognized for their performance and everyone takes pride in their work

    Cons

The coffee machine is a bit antiquated.

    Advice to Management

    Keep up the terrific work!
