I worked at Motorola Mobility full-time (More than 8 years)

    Pros

The environment was open, friendly and professional, especially at the local department level. Management tended not to micro manage, but set goals and re-assessed on a weekly basis. Managers were accessible and protected their people from excessive interference by other managers and departments.

    Cons

The company tended to commit to too many projects internally and this would result in 'crisis mode' as the standard operating procedure. This would result in a tendency to need to put in overtime and weekend work for many folks. Continuous workforce reduction was also a stress.

    Advice to Management

They never quite figured out how to effectively shrink the number of simultaneous projects even though senior management was aware of the issues and did try to institute policy to reduce complexity and the number of projects. Competing department heads/managers would need to commit fully for the good of the company to really make it work.

I worked at Motorola Mobility (Less than a year)

    Pros

The staff includes plenty of talented engineering and business professionals that try to that best to help the company succeed.

    Cons

Senior Leadership team that could not manage to work together. Egos first. Saving the company less important.

    Advice to Management

Start using the ability to work cooperatively as a leader as one of the most important requirements for someone to get, and retain, a position in upper management.

    Pros

Great people, great place to learn new skills and apply them quickly

    Cons

Their focus on Six Sigma when they should be focusing on Lean.

    Advice to Management

Eliminate senior positions. It doesn't make sense to have one employee reporting to 3 or more managers.

I worked at Motorola Mobility (More than 3 years)

    Pros

Great company to learn, and utilize technologies. Good benefits, supplied all the tools to learn and be successful.

    Cons

A lot of bureaucracy, politics, and castle building. Often times internal groups were fighting amongst themselves. Some sense of backstabbing.

    Advice to Management

Be transparent and inclusive of employees opinions and talents. Focus more on communication instead of building up your own piece.
