I have been working at Motorola Solutions full-time

    Pros

An always challenging and personally rewarding job where you have the opportunity to contribute to an important industry - software to help First Responders.
The team is friendly and the office is a nice, flexible place to work.
The software teams (agile/scrum) are highly responsible and have a lot of ownership for both the development process and the code they produce.

    Cons

    Customers can be very demanding.
Sometimes the flexible environment can take away from the team feeling strongly co-located and partnered together.

    Advice to Management

HR process generally have the feeling of a very large company, not the smaller more dynamic company MSI has become. Put more control in the hands of managers and leaders of the organizations.

    Pros

Great Learning place with talented leaders and performers. A corporate culture that makes you stronger and stronger if you are a hard worker willing to grow.

    Cons

With too many bought companies Motorola culture is fading. Groups start acting like mafias protecting each other regardless of company interests.
When a company starts selling its facilities in Schaumburg it behaves like people selling their organs because they can't afford simple living. It is a sign of huge reduction probably revolving around the still healthy radio. Cell phone is gone already to Samsung / Apple. Public Safety is a treachery of an ill written short software made in China around heavy soon unnecessary HP and few other manufacturers hardware because of Virtualization. And a complexity introduced in China wise by huge number of parameters to provision that even latest progress in dynamic systems can't model.

    Advice to Management

Watch bought company people and make sure Motorola stays a Baldridge Award winner.

I worked at Motorola Solutions full-time (More than 3 years)

    Pros

There are lots of ways in which Motorola provides compensation to reward its engineers. Tuition reimbursement, stock options, quarterly performance bonuses, and employee stock investment plan are the tools to keep people aboard with an otherwise below the average base salary. If you are willing to take responsibility, you CAN actually learn A LOT on the job. Just don't rely solely on your management to provide you with this training.

    Cons

The work/life balance was horrible for quality engineers, who were capable of getting things done. Opportunities for advancement and growth were absent and were mitigated with once-in-a-while promotions. Many projects had unrealistic expectations and deadlines.

    Advice to Management

Listen to your engineering staff and do not burn them out.
