I have been working at Mountain States Health full-time (More than a year)

    Pros

Great people that want to make a difference for patients. Fun atmosphere. There is room for advancement in almost every position.

    Cons

Pay is below market average. Some people get raises and promotions when it seems they don't do anything better than the rest of us. But, that happens at a lot of companies.

    Advice to Management

Make requirements for advancement clearer and listen to your employee's ideas.

    Pros

    Great teamwork environment.
Good experience to further your career.

    Cons

Pay rate is low with no hope for increases.
Nurses are treated as easily replaced by new grads who won't care that the pay is so low.
Holiday pay, overtime pay, PTO benefits etc are decreasing rather than increasing.

    Advice to Management

Value your employees rather than treating them as expendable.

I worked at Mountain States Health full-time (More than 5 years)

    Pros

Generally flexible schedule. They've negotiated lots of local discounts. Many benefits offered (but few company-paid). This is a large employer, so there are opportunities to move around within the company. Some career advancement is available in selected positions. Leadership education is a primary focus.

    Cons

MSHA will hire people without any computer skills and then expect them to perform computer tasks without additional support. In some cases, they are hiring non-English speaking people to perform work that requires interaction with English speaking staff. Diversity is fine until you can no longer speak with your coworkers. MSHA does not offer "English as a second language" courses. Poor salary schedule (they compare themselves to Ashville, NC). If you are not a clinical person, stick to purely non-clinical jobs. Financially unstable; layoffs and cutbacks since 2012. A 1% annual raise is possible IF you meet all expectations, but it's not enough to do more than buy some gas each paycheck. Clinical training is limited to what MUST be done to meet bare minimums. Everyone's job is up for elimination - new, old, experienced - loyalty and length of service has no bearing. They will eliminate anyone, with or without reason - and will come up with a reason if needed. With the pending mergers happening, there will be less wage competition, and no matter what they say publicly, they are already cutting jobs in preparation for the merger. CEO is a merger specialist, not an interested leader for MSHA. Unethical, uninvolved, and unprincipled management from the top leads to unprincipled management below. Upper management has no clue what is happening at the floor level.

    Advice to Management

MSHA has put years into the patient-centered care principle; it's about time you applied the same idea to the people who DO the caring and supporting of care.

I have been working at Mountain States Health full-time (Less than a year)

    Pros

The people are all nice enough, it is just that there is too much lumped onto one person. It is stressful.

    Cons

There is no appreciation shown for the work that is required. It is too much on one person. everything is inefficient and no moves to improve are listened to.

    Advice to Management

Be a leader, not a boss.

Competitive benefits/salary related to region (cost of living, etc)

    Cons

I have been working at Mountain States Health (Less than a year)

    Pros

Nice people. They make it clear what the job will be online and when you go to HR the people are nice.

    Cons

Interview was not an interview. The hiring manager told me I was over qualified for this job and that he thought I would get bored and leave.

    Advice to Management

Make a new training video for people to watch. It is poorly filmed and makes it hard to determine what is being said by the actors

I worked at Mountain States Health (More than a year)

    Pros

Get to work with some talented co-workers. They keep pretty up to date on technology. If you want to work/live in East Tennessee they are one of the better places to work; however, there really isn't much competition. Get the satisfaction of knowing the work you do does indeed help save lives, even if indirectly.

    Cons

Too much management. They have a CIO, a COO of IT who reports to the CIO, a group of directors who report to the COO, and managers who report to one of the directors. That is way too bloated on management. Office politics are bad, though I heard it used to be worse (a symptom of the bloated management). Pay is low compared to IT in other industries, but HR will tell you that they pay better than other health care providers in the area (this is probably true, but short-sighted considering IT people can work in many industries, not just healthcare). The "security" policies are over the top and way too restrictive on the IT employees. Expected to work "on call" with no compensation and no comp time if called. The only window for system upgrades is 2 am on Sunday mornings. When something goes wrong, the first order of business seems to be to find out who is to blame. Expected to have a smart phone and a personal computer but are not given any compensation for using your own devices.

    Advice to Management

HR needs to include more than just local healthcare companies when evaluating IT salaries. IT management really needs to be trimmed (too many chiefs as the old saying goes). IT security shouldn't get in the way of IT people doing their work. Employees need to be reassured that they won't be discarded once the merger with Wellmont is complete.
