I worked at Moy Park full-time for more than a year

    Pros

Training took only a day, and no previous experience at a factory was required Friendly colleagues, with a broad range of cultural and work backgrounds It was fascinating to see, and to get involved in the process of how food is mass produced, and there was a definite satisfaction in producing several tonnes of chicken products per day Almost no English skill required (kind of a moot point if you're reading... this, but a lot of the workers spoke almost no English and managed fine)

    Cons

Shifts from 7am to 7pm, with unpaid breaks just over the minimum legal time limit. I also had to be early to work every day, and the factory was in an out of town location, so was a bit of a trek for everyone to walk to in the morning. Working in an underground, refrigerated factory with no natural light for days on end was kind of depressing. A lot of physically demanding work, e.g. some days I'd have to... spend the whole day pushing 100kg carts of chicken from one side of the factory to the other. Not suitable for anyone prone to squeamishness! You are, after all, handling many tonnes of raw meat each day. The overalls mostly protect you from the blood and liquid from the meat that splashes onto you, but sometimes you get so soaked in the blood that it soaks through your overalls and clothes, which is kind of disgusting. Almost no opportunity to get promoted

    Advice to Management

Providing free meals (even if just the chicken produced at the factory), would increase worker loyalty
