I have been working at Mozilla full-time (More than a year)

    Pros

Contributing to help defend a free, secure and public open web.

The company is continuously modernizing and it's a pleasure to be a part of so much incredible change.

    Also, incredible work/life balance.

    Cons

After 18 months, I can't think of any.

The worst was their parental leave but they just fixed that so... yay!

    Advice to Management

Continue to make hard decisions and leading us in the right direction.

    I worked at Mozilla full-time

    Pros

Competitive base salary and strong cash bonus (no stocks, however) plus the occasional performance bonus (also cash). Company all-hands several times a year in exotic locations (Orlando, London, Hawaii). It's like 2-3 extra vacation weeks a year, all expenses paid. At the last one I didn't attend any of the sessions and nobody noticed or complained.

    Cons

I don't know where to start. I love the mission but the place is like train wreck in slow motion ever since Brendan Eich left. The new CEO is clueless and incompetent. He's widely ridiculed inside the company even by senior management. Most of the executives are just hiding and collecting their paychecks. Over the last 2 years the company has given up on Firefox OS and is giving up on mobile in general now to focus on the desktop browser, which fewer and fewer people want to use.

    Advice to Management

Hire a new CEO and executives with ideas. Bring Brendan Eich back.

I have been working at Mozilla as a contractor (More than a year)

    Pros

Great work community, supportive and mentoring. Mistakes are opportunities for growth, not opportunities to find a new job.

    Cons

    Paperwork can move very slowly.

I have been working at Mozilla full-time (More than 3 years)

    Pros

    - brilliant people
    - challenging projects that force you to learn and grow
    - mission driven
    - excellent compensation and benefits

    Cons

    - Very few. We're in an industry with large competitors that have superior budgets. But that's part of the challenge and why it's such an exciting and fulfilling place to work.

    Advice to Management

    Keep pushing forward!

I have been working at Mozilla full-time (More than 3 years)

    Pros

Great people, casual, informal culture. Excellent benefits. Excellent salary. Flexible schedule. Ability to speak your mind and "share" about everything in and outside of Mozilla

    Cons

Strong sense of entitlement from many employees. Working in a distributed, open-source fashion across different geos and remote working situations can be hugely challenging but also hugely rewarding.

    Advice to Management

Not sure that returning to "start-up days" and the ways things were done in the past to bring back energy is the right way to go. Also all employees, no matter how motivated and talented, could benefit by being mentored by their manager. It gets old to be constantly told to "create your own path."

I worked at Mozilla full-time (More than 5 years)

    Pros

There are many interesting things to work on, especially if you love the web. They offer flexible workdays and other employee perks.

    Cons

The company lacks direction beyond the (very) high-level goals. Most of the org is in service to Firefox OS - this is necessary given the company's direction, but sucks resources from other projects.

Directors and VPs seem very disconnected from PMs and engineers (the caveat is Firefox OS, that immediate team is run better than most). This causes mismatches in expectations and frustration to those down the reporting chain.

    Advice to Management

Spend time actually looking at why teams are in the state they are. There are too many decisions made based on emotion and non-empirical, subjective feelings.

I have been working at Mozilla full-time (More than 3 years)

    Pros

    - Very flexible culture. You can work from home and depending of your manager you can work in pretty much whatever you want.
    - A lot of travel to different places in the world.
    - Extremely smart people all over.
    - Fairly flat organization and ability to work in cross functional projects.

    Cons

    - Lack of clear vision for the future. The most important thing keeps changing every quarter.
    - Old guard vs new guard conflict.
    - Leadership keeps creating fires and crisis around Firefox OS. They gave up control of our future to carriers.
    - No Marketing leadership. Very engineering driven organization in a commoditized industry.
    - No CEO. 6 C levels have left in the past year.
    - Lots of middle managers that add little to no value.
    - Global organization with teams spread across the globe. Anything that requires multiple people tends to be slow, very slow.
    - Consensus driven work. Getting things done is very, very time consuming.
    - Very little opportunity to change teams.

    Advice to Management

    - Due diligence of teams and middle managers. Particularly at the Director level, there's a lot of wasted resources.
    - Keep focusing on few products that can have the largest impact.

I worked at Mozilla full-time (More than 3 years)

    Pros

Great pay and many great employees who really "get" the culture. Other benefits such as free snacks and regular "cantina" parties create a great vibe.

    Cons

While in the past Mozilla has been open company-wide and eager to help its employees, its recent growth has changed the culture considerably and shed a lot of the better work force. A more closed environment has followed, one that shuns speaking up when something is wrong. A lot of "group think" exists now.

    Advice to Management

Listen to your employees and stop firing or delegitimizing your employees, even if they have a minority opinion. Discourage "group think."
