I worked at Mystic Seaport full-time

    Pros

Wonderful environment, you are immersed in a historical and beautiful environment on a daily basis; people are dedicated and mission of the museum is so valuable

    Cons

As with most charitable organizations, the pay is on the lower end; truly minor observation, but traversing between the buildings at the height of winter is a little chilly, but the casual environment easily allows wearing boots.

    Advice to Management

Keep working hard to keep this historic treasure in business! While I know longer work there, I still visit and am so glad this museum is so beautifully maintained.

I worked at Mystic Seaport as a contractor (More than a year)

    Pros

Everyone is very passionate about their respective crafts and there is so much to learn from everyone at the Seaport. Beautiful place to work and a lot of fun!

    Cons

Employees are not paid or valued enough for the amount of work expected from them. A lot of overturn because they do not invest in their quality employees and lose them to better paying/hour jobs.

Unprofessional attitudes found in many departments.

    Advice to Management

Appreciate your employees not just with "thank yous" and tighten up the professionalism in all departments.

    Pros

The best part of this job was working with the public and being on the river daily.

    Cons

Easy: Management. There are a few, decent, kind, dedicated souls here. Unfortunately, they are sorely outnumbered by a collection of bullies (lower mgmt) and and those so completely out of touch that they might as well be wax (the CEO.) Employees are grossly underpaid and poor management is rampant.

I have been working at Mystic Seaport full-time (Less than a year)

    Pros

The staff is welcoming and helpful when settling in. I was able to learn a lot about different positions at the company. I was given some great projects and had as much direction and assistance as I asked for. You're able to take time to explore the museum and learn a lot about the history of boats in the U.S. The events put on for donors/fundraising events are extremely well run and really fun to work!

    Cons

There is often a lot of downtime and people often do not share projects at the onset. They will often take on too much work, and not want to share that with newer/younger employees.

    Advice to Management

Trust new employees more to take on more work!

I have been working at Mystic Seaport part-time (More than a year)

    Pros

It's a beautiful place to work, I was always happy to arrive there. The work could be hard, but the tips made it worth it. My boss was always kind and understanding.

    Cons

The only con I can think of is the low pay, but that is to be expected with working for a museum.

    Pros

Cause related maritime oriented museum with robust in-school partnerships and a fleet of historic and replica vessels and campus environment. Highly dedicated and team oriented community of employees dedicated to the mission.

    Cons

Seasonal, and consistent focus on fundraising to sustain growth.

    Advice to Management

Continue to champion the Museum's mission to broad and new audiences.

    Cons

    Pay is pretty low
    Heavily seasonal

I have been working at Mystic Seaport part-time (More than a year)

    Pros

I loved working with smart and talented people both in my department and in a variety of departments within the museum. I learned so much as well as helping others.

    Cons

I was hired part-time for a position that was previously full-time, so I found it challenging to get the same amount of work done in half the time. It clearly required more than part-time hours to complete all the tasks involved and I found that frustrating.

    Advice to Management

Use your human resources wisely. They are extremely valuable.
