I worked at NAGRA USA full-time (Less than a year)

    Pros

Excellent benefit (PTO, 401k match) but base salary + year end bonus is market average at best and no stock options.

    Cons

The division in SF bay area has been on the decline since 2010. Year over year sales had and is still declining. The number of customers have dropped since the glory OpenTV 2 days and older customers not upgrading to OpenTV 5. Why? Because this company is technology backwards and didn't realize they need to move toward newer tech until it's too late. By the time OpenTV 5 is ready, you got Netflix, Roku, YouTube, Amazon Fire, etc. out in the market grabbing market share from traditional cable TV providers.

Instead of investing in newer tech and hiring more capable architects, the company decides to take the "cost cutting" path. They "restructured" people from SF bay area and hired people in India. Several years later, they decided it was too expensive to operate in Beijing and gut them too and move those jobs to India. BTW, they also gut the SF office and move them to India.

In the dying years, with reduced engineer resources, instead of adding new product features or improving existing features, the VP decides to "optimize" engineering processes. Basically, combine QA and developer role into one, on the shoulder of the developer. I didn't understand why they are doing this until they announce they're going to gut Beijing...

Think about this for a moment... If cost of QA in Beijing is too expensive, what about positions in USA? If you want to join a dead end job, go ahead and join.

    Advice to Management

Don't bother operate a product division with cost cutting strategy in today's competitive environment. You might as well fire everybody except a few engineers to maintain existing customers and make money off of intellectual properties.

And good luck with setting up new QA team in India from scratch. Do you know how long it took to build the team in Beijing until they are competent?

    Disapproves of CEO

    Pros

    - Great family company with a long history that invest in long term
    - Amazing product such as OpenTV 5 - considered one of the best solution on the market

    Cons

    - German SVP of division is horrific... complete lack of vision, no outlook, just interested in discussing his own hobbies
    - Prior Leadership and Product team was world class but they all left for higher growth opportunity! Bring them back.

    Advice to Management

You need to change the current leadership who has brought in a very bad vibe & morale, frustrated so many and is unable to bring new business.

    Pros

Flexible hours and positive work environment. Plenty of team and office bonding events throughout the year. Very easy to communicate with management when needed.

    Cons

Unwilling to negotiate a raise in pay after I received a better offer and I was not given much of a chance to work on other projects.

    Advice to Management

Some of the management practices were outdated and unorganized which made setting and meeting deadlines more difficult. Would be better if management had more technical experience.

I have been working at NAGRA USA full-time (More than 8 years)

    Pros

My company has family-like environment because of its small size.
Here the number of employee is less than 100.

    Cons

We have a culture of keeping person who has not met expectation for long time due to our family-like air.

    Advice to Management

I feed that our company need to expand reward and punishment depending on evaluation to keep excellent engineer and to stimulate lagged one.
