    Pros

GSFC was a great place to learn and grow; I worked on interesting projects and got to see so much during the summer I was there. I loved everyone I met there.

    Cons

I didn't really find any cons during my time there. There was some level of red tape, but everyone was so nice and willing to help. Highly recommend!

    Advice to Management

I had one of the greatest managers I have ever worked with. He was always willing to make time to listen to questions and concerns. He had a great team because he was such a great manager.

    Positive Outlook

    Pros

Science driven organization, chances to work on large missions, good management on the science, engineering, and flight project sides. Smart scientists and engineers

    Cons

government bureaucracy, lack of funding for R&D initiatives, increasing centralization of services, antique facilities, required training classes that are all bureaucratic in nature, anti-meritocracy, lack of promotion opportunities, some retired-in-place workforce

    Advice to Management

Get funding for replacing old buildings, promote a meritocracy rather than quotas, don't let the IT folks impede the mission.

I worked at NASA Goddard Space Flight Center full-time (More than 10 years)

    Pros

Chance to work with cutting-edge space science missions.

As long as the bureaucracy stays out of the way, small teams can have a lot of independence.

    Cons

The bureaucracy always gets in the way.

The lack of profit motive, and the tendency to promote engineers to management rather than hiring managers, makes the management less than pleasant to work for.

    Advice to Management

Hire people with management training; reward people for good management, not adequate budget following.

I have been working at NASA Goddard Space Flight Center full-time (More than 10 years)

    Pros

Goddard's mission to enhance scientific understanding in Astrophysics, earth science, solar physics, and planetary science is extremely inspirational.

    Cons

Large organization with a long history of success. Some people believe our past successes means we have to keep doing the same thing. As such, people are unwilling to step out of their comfort zone and challenge the status quo.
