I have been working at NASA full-time

    Pros

Generally free to innovate and "create your own adventure", but constrained by US government policies. Good job stability. Good benefits (Thrift Savings Plan, health benefits matching, Federal Employee Retirement System).

    Cons

Very hierarchical with an aging workforce that is often times retired in place. Very difficult to remove underperformers. High level of "office politics" with lower than expected promotion of ideas purely based on technical merit.

    Advice to Management

Narrow priorities to maximize constrained budget. Invest more in professional development outside of the agency to avoid homogenized thought processes.

    Pros

I have been working at NASA full-time (More than 5 years)

    Pros

The culture at NASA is awesome, very people oriented. NASA supports a healthy work life balance, numerous employees have flexible schedules. NASA has been voted the best place to work a couple years in row! Parking and the commute is not an issue!

    Cons

There isn't a downside of working here per say-- this comment refers to working in the Government period. There is a cap in the Government, so be prepared for that. Depending on the series you work in, your grade (salary) can only go to a certain cap per the position and its requirements. There's little to no flexibility unless you move to a different position.

I worked at NASA full-time (More than a year)

    Pros

NASA is always interesting and has bipartisan support,

    Cons

It's difficult to get anything done because there are too many cooks in the kitchen and the agency wastes a lot of resources. Lots of red tape and a ton of weird, socially awkward people work there. Working in a tweed cube every day gets tough.

    Advice to Management

Treat people like human beings, not robots.

    Cons

Don't like the bureaucracy/politics that go on.

I have been working at NASA full-time (More than a year)

    Pros

Has great work- life balance. Always open to funding the education of their engineers.

    Cons

To start out, as a young engineer in California, the salary does not match the cost of living. Its very hard to start out with a government salary.
