    Recommends

I have been working at NAWC

    Pros

Job Stability. Opportunity to work on cutting edge technologies and concepts. Hands-on work. Opportunity to cultivate your own development programs and funding relationships. NAWC has a rotational work assignment for college graduates that allow exposure to the various facets of the engineering organization. Scientist and Engineers are allowed the freedom of movement between work positions and programs. If you... have a particular area of technological interest, research and development funds can be obtained to follow your interests and vision. Of course, there needs to be a perceived future application or enabling technology for military applications. There is a great deal of professional freedom, and corresponding responsibility. Low cost of living allows for income to go further.

    Cons

Middle Managers are promoted engineers without adequate professional management training. Employees are often responsible for their own career development with minimal guidance. NAWC has instituted a new personnel system that should improve these issues. It sometimes appears that support staff involved in noncore business areas (business and contracts) can advance faster than the scientists and engineers.

    Advice to Management

Articulate organization vision and emphasis on marketing NAWC's past and present successes, while positioning the organization for creative work in the future.

    Doesn't Recommend
    Negative Outlook

I have been working at NAWC full-time for more than 10 years

    Pros

Pockets of interesting technical work. Job security, good training opportunities, liberal leave policies. Relatively easy for engineer to get lateral transfers to different areas of work.

    Cons

Mind numbing bureaucracy. Much of management would be considered administrators, not managers - these administrators are risk averse, not dynamic thinkers, there to simply enforce rules.

    Advice to Management

Reward and recognize excellent employees and terminate under-performing employees (very difficult to do).
