I worked at NBN Co full-time for more than a year

    Pros

    - excellent work life balance - interesting projects - some highly motivated and great people there

    Cons

    - middle management can be toxic, but this is variable - no reason to work here as a permanent as contractors have much better deal and are trained as much as permanent

I worked at NBN Co for more than 3 years

    Pros

Large volumes of work. Important nation building project. Very smart people at the coalface.

    Cons

Unsurprisingly, a political place to work. Many people feathering their nest building their own little empire in middle management and trying to climb the ladder (sometimes, at the expense of others). Who you know is important here. Employees are made to 'dig their own graves' (train their cheaper, overseas replacement) - permanents and contractors alike. This is widely feared and reflects in general culture and motivation. I can only assume middle management is new to IT or are simply too hands off, because the rest of the industry figured out these offshore companies (Wipro, InfoSys, TCS, Accenture, etc) are a waste of money 5-10 years ago (even when you are pay a cheaper daily rate per person). You can get a skilled local team for the around the same price if you put in the effort to build and grow them, even before you factor in you only need 1/3rd the people and don't have to throw away/re-write a solution 2 years after it went live. One 'stabilisation' project after the other. Hat's off to these vendors, it's a great way for them to make money, but it's selling our country short (in terms of taxpayers, end users and local industry). These are our best jobs going overseas - including the huge call centre. It should be in Bathurst, not Bangalore. Pay levels are all over the place - some mid 20's people are paid excessive amounts (a good $40-60k more than their previous jobs - lucky them!), but then poor packages offered to attract skilled seniors.
