I worked at NCQA full-time (More than 3 years)

    Pros

Interesting work, passionate coworkers, work-from home options, bonus, paid-time off

    Cons

Ability and workload varies significantly between departments even though this is not accounted for in compensation. Mid-level capable staff gets dumped on and working around the clock expected. There are consistently unrealistic timelines and senior leadership only cares about the bottom line. NCQA used to be a more mission driven organization but with the recent internal issues (see posts below) that organization has changed significantly. Most higher level staff do not trust mid-level staff to produce materials and there are endless review cycles up the chain of command. Staff are also discouraged from having opinions. It is all about executing what senior level staff think without question. Errors are not tolerated. While there are opportunities to be promoted, they come with no training on management and the organization suffers as a result. Certain senior-level staff just coast by since they have been at NCQA for over 6 years before the PCMH profit bubble. There is no accountability on supervisors and while you will receive a performance review with a subjective rating system there is NO opportunity to evaluate your supervisors.

Staff morale is at the lowest it has been and turnover is rampant throughout all levels of the organization. Even the recent great place to work initiatives have been poorly attended by staff. I do not recommend joining this depressing organization.

    Advice to Management

Hire more staff for departments that are struggling. The efficiency movement has driven out a lot of top performers and will continue to do so. Compensate staff for their responsibilities rather than the category they fall into which vary substantially between departments. For example, an IC-3 position in performance management is vastly different than an an IC-3 position in RP.

I have been working at NCQA full-time (More than 5 years)

    Pros

    - Competitive pay
    - Excellent benefits
    - Strives to be a great place to work
    - Excellent facility

    Cons

    - Siloed departments leads to a lack of communication and multiple departments doing the same work
    - Not all departments respected/resourced equally
    - Not all employees rewarded equally
    - Some departments are overworked and stretched thin, while others are overstaffed
    - Manual processes and outdated tech badly need updating
    - Mild interest in acknowledging and solving above problems

    Advice to Management

Acknowledge that NCQA is too siloed to operate smoothly as one company. Understand that some units are extremely overworked. Invest in employees' day-to-day happiness-- not just events and perks. Search for alternate business models-- accrediting health plans under current antiquated processes won't be tolerated forever.

    Pros

    - People passionate about what they do
    - work is interesting

    Cons

    - Promote people to management who are great at their work but terrible at managing people
    - Lower level employees are not often blamed for things that are out of their control
    - Salary is a little low compared to industry levels

    Advice to Management

Work on effectively managing employees and encourage growth. Also show your employees you value them. This is a good company but it needs a little more work to make it great.

I have been working at NCQA full-time (More than 10 years)

    Pros

They try to be a Great Place to Work. There are good benefits, they organize fun activities for staff, there is a relaxation room (where you can nap, shower or breastfeed) and a lounge room (where you can sit or have informa meetings). The organization in general has flexible policy on work schedule. There are many colleagues who telecommute full time.

    Cons

Some departments try to do too much with limited resources, therefore unable to maintain work life balance and create some stressed and unhappy employees.

    Advice to Management

Look at variations in policies between departments.
