I worked at NEC Laboratories America, Inc. as an intern (Less than a year)

    Pros

Smart researchers, interesting projects to work on, friendly staff. A great focus on publishing papers, which is very good for PhD students. Normally about 40-50 interns in summer, priceless opportunities to build professional connections and make friendships.

    Cons

The area is rural, hard to get anywhere without a car.

I worked at NEC Laboratories America, Inc. as an intern (Less than a year)

    Pros

Extremely smart people. Working on important research problems. Good track record for tier one publications. I had a really great time during the summer when I spent three months as an intern working on a research prototype.

    Cons

Other than the fact that they have only two locations, one in Princeton and another in California, I cannot think of many cons. The perks may not be the best as in matching the famous internet companies but other than that, I am not sure what the real cons are.

    Advice to Management

    Keep it as it is.

I have been working at NEC Laboratories America, Inc. full-time

    Pros

Freedom to do interesting things, very smart people, friendly atmosphere, technically challenging, good balance of work and life, travel to interesting conferences

    Cons

Lack of growth opportunities, salary is median for New York area, lack of collaboration with other groups in the company, limited access to business group for ideas and data.

    Advice to Management

Please try to increase the interaction among groups and encourage collaboration. There is also a lack of appreciation of engineering and a tendency to belittle ideas saying, "where's the research in that?" People tend to spend a lot of time talking about ideas and less time in producing real things.

I have been working at NEC Laboratories America, Inc. as an intern (Less than a year)

    Pros

Work environment (relaxed but productive), co-workers, nice group events. Office doors are usually open and you can chat with anyone as long as they are not extremely busy with something (and I never encountered that)

    Cons

The area is a bit too quiet and there is not a great amount of things to do. It feels like a good place to settle down (in a bad way). But then again, definitely great for a few months.
