Awful place to work
Jul 9, 2018 - Anonymous Employee in Manchester, EnglandRecommendCEO ApprovalBusiness OutlookPros
There are absolutely no pros.
Cons
Fellow staff members are rude and spend more time slagging off other staff members than actually working. No benefits to doing to doing this job, rubbish pay, no bonuses, management completely unhelpful, do not even train new staff properly but expect them to be able to do everything straight away. Expect you to work all hours of the day, ridiculous 'sale' hours ending at 10pm on Christmas Eve and then back in Boxing Day at 5am. Management will choose your holiday dates for you without even offering you the chance to choose your own.

Good place
Oct 5, 2021 - Package Handler/Parcel Assistant in Woking, EnglandRecommendCEO ApprovalBusiness OutlookPros
Next are quite organised with their parcel technology and I was surprised at how reliable their system was. I worked in the Woking store and all the staff were friendly and easy to work with. Manager was good as well, seemed to know the store inside and out.
Cons
I worked during tier 3/4 restrictions so at times wasn't the most exciting job but think Covid is to blame for that.

probably the worst job I’ve had
Sep 6, 2021 - Sales Consultant in Staines, EnglandRecommendCEO ApprovalBusiness OutlookPros
the other staff at my level were very nice and tried to help me out when they could
Cons
the management was appalling, 0 training was given other than standing at a tillpoint just to watch health and safety videos, and when I asked questions to try and get better I was often talked to like I was an idiot and then given incomplete information on how to do a task. When I then did a task incorrectly, I was reprimanded even though I had been given little info on how I was supposed to do it and, as mentioned before, not encouraged to ask questions by any means. I’ve worked hospitality since I was a teenager and this was my first retail job (which they were aware of), but I was consistently expected to understand systems when I had been given no help on them. I had to rely on other people at my level to train me, even though they had not been told to and had no obligation to do this, they simply had to so that I was a useful member of staff on shift. The benefits they offer seem appealing, but I was never told how exactly to use them — for example, you’re given a working wardrobe allowance for your uniform as they expect you to wear Next clothes. However, from what I could tell this is only a discount and not full compensation and needs to be done through their system, you cannot simply buy clothes and then get the money refunded — no one ever explained to me how this worked, what I should do to access my working wardrobe allowance or if I was even entitled to it as a temporary staff member, though I would receive occasional emails that said it had been upped and gave no more info. As a result, I spent £60 buying clothes to wear exclusively for the job, but was never compensated accurately, despite that benefit being part of the reason I joined. From people I’ve spoken to, it seems my specific store was bad and the company overall is a lot better but, still, I can’t say I’d ever recommend working there based on my experience.

Worked at Next during my time during University
Feb 20, 2023 - Customer Sales Assistant in Edinburgh, ScotlandRecommendCEO ApprovalBusiness OutlookPros
-fairly flexible hours, if deadlines are looming -Some Managers were very accommodating and easy to approach for help -all staff members were very friendly and happy to take time to explain any issues or problems you had
Cons
-poor management, often were placed on shifts without consent during busy periods due to short staff - new system introduced, withdrew a feature where you had to confirm additional shifts online. Now managers can change your timetable freely.
