I worked at NHS Digital full-time for more than 5 years

    Pros

Good people in development who work hard. There are some benefits that you can get as an employee. It's a steady job.

    Cons

Lack of progression, I was there for 6 years and was overlooked many times, despite applying. Line management could restrict your growth because they don't want to hire and train someone new.

    Advice to Management

Ensure employees are able to progress.

I worked at NHS Digital full-time for less than a year

    Pros

9-5 hours and get paid on time

    Cons

This place will dismiss you without warning after only working there for a few weeks if you’re not picking up the skills for the job quick enough. They do not provide anywhere near enough training and there is a serious lack of support. There is also an appalling hierarchy structure. Working within the contact centre at NHS Digital also seems to be a place where the managers get a sad buzz out of belittling people and...

    Advice to Management

Provide training and support, don’t dismiss people or threaten them with their jobs before exploring every avenue with support and training, have patience, be kind and appreciative of your staff

I have been working at NHS Digital full-time for more than a year

    Pros

Everyone is friendly and there is good camaraderie. You know what you are doing is making a good impact to peoples lives - if this is important to you its a great place. Fairly well committed to modern methods such as continous integration and test driven development.

    Cons

Sometimes build things a little over complicated. Quite contractor heavy so permy roles are rare.

    Advice to Management

The value in an IT company is in its staff not its infrastructure. Work hard to retain staff which hold product knowledge and are productive.

I worked at NHS Digital full-time

    Pros

NHS terms and conditions are good. Some teams are embracing Agile and are doing great things.

    Cons

The organisation is at the mercy of political change. The current re-structuring has unsettled many staff.

    Advice to Management

Create a homogeneous Agile culture. Reward hard work, loyalty and expertise. Focus on change that can be made right now in the NHS and social care. Take NHS front-line imperatives and long-term issues with technology into account when planning.

    Neutral Outlook

I have been working at NHS Digital full-time for more than 10 years

    Pros

Good opportunities if in the right team and self promote. NHS pension - although contributions are high. Generous annual leave entitlements.

    Cons

Very inconsistent management, from some very good managers to very poor managers. Lots of silos. The organisation is currently going through considerable organisational change which is very poorly managed resulting in low staff moral in many areas of the organisation.

    Advice to Management

Don't promote a DevOps culture then deny staff opportunities when they say 'we' rather than 'I'.
