I worked at NJEDA full-time (More than 5 years)

    Pros

    seven hour workday
    no drug test

    Cons

Micromanagement and fear of making business decisions are the most challenging aspects of working here.

Most situations are set up to make the employee fail and pplicies often make things ineffective.

If you are an intelligent person who likes to find ways to get things done outside of normal thinking, this is no the place for you.

Often asked to work through lunch or not take lunch at all.

Asked to ignore applicants while senior management backpedals on issues with ineffective programs.

In some instances asked to lie to applicants.

    Advice to Management

Sr. management is weak at best in an environment where nobody seems to want to make difficult scission's. Management seems to only look out after their best interest.

    Pros

The opportunity to work with small business owners devastated by Hurricane Sandy.

    Cons

The work environment is micro managed to the point of being hostile/harassing and impedes the ability of the staff to effectively perform job duties.

    Advice to Management

Needs to re-evaluate the positions of Director and Program Manager for possible restructuring and replacement.

    Pros

The NJEDA has always been on of the most progressive organizations with which to work. There are plenty of opportunities to become involved in a myriad of projects so that one is never stuck in one place

    Cons

The organization has become far too political in recent years and this has caused the exodus of a large number of top employees.

    Advice to Management

Respect of the individual and their professional expertise. Political appointees who have no knowledge of the organization and what it does should collaborate with the top staff who do.

    Positive Outlook

    Pros

Great working conditions, pleasant colleagues. Same benefits and time off as most state employees. Management styles vary considerably depending on department.

    Cons

While internal transfers are common, there is very little leadership development or management training, so some managers are poorly prepared to manage staff.

I have been working at NJEDA full-time (Less than a year)

    Pros

Highly-talented and high profile co-workers. Everyone is usually pretty professional and driven. With its status as a quasi-government agency, it has the best of the private and public sector.

    Cons

There is a ton of redundancy and the management has its hiccups.

    Pros

Benefits are great and cover every facet. They pay is higher than the average in the industry. Coworkers are friendly; senior management are attentive, knowledgeable, and supportive

    Cons

Mid-management is difficult to work with; using older technologies; limited budget for access to resources that one needs to complete the work

Former Employee - Anonymous Employee in Trenton, NJ

    Pros

The organization is very clear in regards to job duties and responsibilities; there is no passing the buck. That is typical of a state related agency.

    Cons

Since this is a state agency, the dissemination of information isn't terrific. There is alot of talk about what the Governor will do and how it will affect the workers. They guard the office supplies like they are gold.

    Advice to Management

Share information about upcoming changes as soon as possible. Also lighten up on guarding the office products; you almost need to sign in blood when you need something to do your job.
