I have been working at NORCAL Mutual Insurance full-time

    Pros

You work with a good kind group of people. The hours and workload is great, you will have your personal life too. They have Quarterly all employee meetings when you hear from CEO and higher manager on company updates. They also have internal fun activities such as TGIF lunches, BINGO, holiday party, etc.

    Cons

The company is growing but we've been under the water for awhile with our earnings. We had many layoffs recently and more people are losing their jobs by mid 2017 as they are closing and downgrading their offices in San Francisco. Employees are under a lot of stress and it's not a healthy happy environment any more. The worse is all these changes and decisions were made without any base or planning and the company is struggling. And as a result, no bonus or very very little is left for employees although everyone has been working really hard.

I have been working at NORCAL Mutual Insurance full-time (More than 10 years)

    Pros

It's been a great company to work for many years. Good work/life balance. Mostly kind, supportive people.

    Cons

Lots of change and re-organization and employees are feeling it. Morale low. Lots of fear.

    Advice to Management

Invest in people, systems and better IT. We are lagging behind in a fast-paced world.

I worked at NORCAL Mutual Insurance full-time (More than 10 years)

    Pros

Used to be a team approach to Provide security to the medical community, good compensation.

    Cons

So many constant changes led to work/life imbalance. Senior Mgmt. shift seems to have led to an annual layoff inconsistent with communicated culture & Values.

    Advice to Management

Listening to recommendations from all offices and tested changes rather than daily changes to the same process saves time and money; as well as a better work flow for all involved.

    Pros

If you are someone that likes to see a company grow and change, this is the time to join NORCAL. This company recently reinvented themselves brand wise as well as changing their management team. Lots of new approaches and energy!

    Cons

Not an innovative place utilizing newer technologies nor processes. Your technical skills become obsolete very quickly. Little professional development.

    Advice to Management

Seek to understand before being understood. What do I mean by this? Learn to ask questions and solicit feedback before pushing your ideas or plans on employees.

I have been working at NORCAL Mutual Insurance full-time (More than 3 years)

    Pros

Culture, staff: kind, smart, and skilled - willing to help, company objective and strategy, innovation, philanthropic, travel opportunities, mission

    Cons

location, work load is heavy - limited resources (or mis-aligned org. structure), limited collaboration/communication between BU (segregation)

    Advice to Management

strategic plan/objectives need to be communicated better from mgmt and ensure same message is communicated at each level down to tier-1; better project mgmt to ensure consistent/standard application among all business units

I have been working at NORCAL Mutual Insurance full-time (More than 5 years)

    Pros

I have worked with Norcal for many years in the San Francisco Bay Area. In my experience, the company is unique in its commitment to ethical practice of insurance. This is not for everyone. If you are more comfortable being a mindless cog at an insurance money-mill, then this company is not for you. The original California company thrived because of its culture of integrity. The company has been so successful that it has been purchasing flagging insurers across the country. Some of the purchased companies encouraged an amoral culture that equates professionalism with moral bankruptcy. A minority of the existing staff in the purchased companies were too far gone to change their ways. The negative reviews on this site vividly illustrate the reaction of these people. (Hence, the references to the company being 'behind the times' or 'run by small town folks who think equally small.') With all respect to these people, they can go work at AIG or Chubb, where their 'modern' view of insurance as organized fraud will be well rewarded.

    Cons

The company has been too slow to identify and jettison disgruntled employees who cannot square their idea of professionalism with morality.

I have been working at NORCAL Mutual Insurance full-time (More than 10 years)

    Pros

There are still decent benefits and pay. Most people are very nice and the work is interesting.

    Cons

Senior Management is completely clueless. There is a reorganization every few weeks, experienced people get fired for no apparent reason, and the morale in most departments is dismal. Should be a case study in how to run a formerly successful company into the ground by a combination of arrogance, lack of transparency and trust, and a failed integration.

    Advice to Management

Oh boy. Resign? Retire? Let the people who actually do the work and know what they are doing run the place? All good options but probably not much hope.

    Pros

Some really great people work for the company in all three of the offices! Good stability in the company.

    Cons

Not a lot of growth potential in certain departments.

    Advice to Management

Listen more closely to those who do the actual work. They have a better idea of the bandwidth that is available for projects.
