I worked at NRECA full-time (More than 5 years)

    Pros

Departments with new managers are moving in positive directions.
Good work-life balance when you have small children
    Nice views from offices
    Close to home

    Cons

Lack of growth opportunity. I wouldn’t recommend taking a job here mid-career and hope to move up. Need to be here at least 10 years to be promoted.
HR means well, but isn’t effective outside of recruitment and benefits.
Management teams who’ve been here a long time are self-protecting.

    Advice to Management

My department welcomed new people with fresh ideas. Other departments pretend to care, but want to stay stuck with bad managers no one else wants. Others know who you are and think you should fix this.

CEO and COO should look at where VP and Directors have average of 15 yrs + with company. This is where you’ll find the managers who don’t have leadership skills and don’t do their jobs. Move under performing managers out or over. I have friends who are looking to leave because of this.

    Pros

Great mission, great employees and members.

    Cons

No career advancement opportunities. Very disappointing considering the size of the association. Management doesn't appear to be in positions to encourage professional development or just doesn't know how. Association wide it seems there is a lack of clarity in what policies are in place and what is expected of employees to get a raise, gain more responsibility and so on.

I have been working at NRECA full-time

    Pros

NRECA has good pay and benefits. The work/life balance is relatively easy. There is limited travel. Arlington location is easy to get to from the Metro.

    Cons

The pace of work is very slow and there is a lot of employee turnover. The office in Arlington is very dated and dingy. Leadership is very political. Limited opportunity for promotion.

    Advice to Management

Spend time to figure out why there is so much employee turnover, since IMHO it can't be too much work or too little pay.

I have been working at NRECA full-time (More than 3 years)

    Pros

    - Good benefits
    - A worthy mission
    - Good environment

    Cons

    - Can be slow moving - but that is changing slowly
    - Can be full of silos
    - Some teams do not have enough worker bees and too many decision makers
    - Doesn't feel modern or quite up to speed, despite the company's efforts
    - Does possess many "lifers" which can be a good and bad thing
    - HR moves very slow

    Advice to Management

Retain new talent instead of seeing them go as there always seems to be an influx of managers here and not enough people to manage.

    Pros

Generous pay and very good benefits. 401k match and pension plan for all employees. Verynice people to work with.

    Cons

There is very little opportunity for advancement because the company is so small. There is no incentive for employees. No bonuses or recognition for a job well done. Employees who underperform are not held accountable.
