I have been working at NVR full-time (More than 10 years)

    Pros

NVR builds and sells a quality product. Pay is fair and the benefits are very good, including an ESOP that rewards long-term commitment to the company. There are good opportunities to grow with the company into leadership roles.

    Cons

Much of the fun has been taken out of the sales and production organizations as the company has become hyper-focused on operating metrics and meeting monthly targets. There isn't much real tolerance for individual decisions given almost all decisions seem to have to pass through the CEO for approval before getting pushed out to the operating units for implementation.

    Advice to Management

Relax some of the restrictions on social events and find ways to do more team building. Reward individual business leaders for developing their people in addition to just hitting profitability metrics. And for a company of this size, it is surprising how little the company supports giving back to the community in any meaningful and consistent way; doing more would help people feel better about the company beyond the pay and stock price.

    Positive Outlook

I have been working at NVR full-time

    Pros

The work environment is professional and located in a Ryan Homes local branch which makes for a family type atmosphere with co-workers. Its a small company compared to larger local banks mortgage dept but its stable and no history of layoffs. The work stream is mostly heavy over the last year and projected to almost double this year. All files are new construction. There has been overtime about 4 months out of the last 12 but its voluntary. Direct line to Underwriting managers and Underwriting Vice president, and Mortgage Co President no multiple layers of management. Good product mix FHA, VA, USDA and conventional. They hire conventional only underwriters with intention on helping you get DE/Chums in the future with proven production and quality underwrites. Minimal supervision. Current production requirement is 6 touches a day.

    Cons

The opportunity for advancement within the underwriting realm is currently very slim. The only promotion possible is to Sr.Underwriter and only those with VA LAPP hold this title to my knowledge. There are about 50 underwriters currently and no in between team leads, just two underwriting managers and a VP. The two underwriting managers do ALOT plus manage and answer questions for 50 people. For this reason it sometimes takes quite a bit of time to get an answer when you need to confer on a difficult file. So if you are one that needs constant contact with your manager this job could be a challenge. The person you report to is in another state. Perhaps team lead positions will open up as more are hired its much needed.
You are paid once a month-my only real complaint about this company.

    Advice to Management

Consider switching to bi-weekly pay, and create lead positions so that your underwriting managers are not so bogged down.
