I have been working at NWEA full-time for more than 5 years

    Pros

New CEO is raising the bar, bringing focus, and setting a clear course for the org. This IS a mission oriented place - the one thing everyone knows and holds us to is mission. It's not like other places that claim it's about mission while only talking about revenue when customers aren't around. Under the new CEO I see a more accountable executive team, less infighting, decisions not being undone, and slowly more...

    Cons

The great benefits means people who should quit often don't, so there are some unmotivated folks in the org who do just enough to stick around. But they don't do a great job, they're unhappy and they can stir up some drama. In some teams, it's easy to be average and skate. That means other people pick up the slack. And get held to a higher standard too. It's not really fair. Too many meetings, although those are...

    Advice to Management

Clean house a bit. Stay the course set by the new CEO. Either set a bar or provide training on soft skills for leaders. Communication, management skills -and not the year long course that's useful but too basic because it doesn't really move the build skills, meeting management... are there courses in empathy or understanding how your own issues change how you see your staff? I doubt it but those would help in more than...

I have been working at NWEA full-time

    Pros

Good life balance. Good benefits. Salary is lower for people that have been there for a while. Some groups running well.

    Cons

Managers without direct reports. VP without reports. Engineering is unable to quickly build products. So many Product managers.

    Advice to Management

The IT side of the house is able to build and develop applications. Figure out why the Engineering side can't.

    I worked at NWEA full-time

    Pros

Very relationship oriented. Easy to be in proximity to senior leadership. Approachable leadership. Good management training program.

    Cons

This place is chaos and not planned chaos, simply tumultuous to work there. So much going on without true accountability. They like to refer to it as an Enterprise mindset, but really all it is is just chasing after initiatives with no real direction or goals in mind. New CEO might change that, but they are now in a huge reorganization with lots going on, much of it negative.

    Advice to Management

Slow down and take a deep breath. Get rid of the folks who are bringing in initiatives that are weakening the core "what we are really good at". Your company isn't ready for some of those big global products.

I have been working at NWEA full-time for more than 3 years

    Pros

Work that I am passionate about. Good benefits. Allowed to work from home two days a week.

    Cons

Path for growth not clearly articulated. Salary compression within the Content Specialist jobs and inequitable pay. Many colleagues lack assessment experience outside of NWEA.

    Advice to Management

Hire managers who lead well and can set the tone. Do not promote people into management roles if they are not suited to the work.

    I worked at NWEA

    Pros

The people working there are the best. Always trying their best and willing to help out when needed.

    Cons

Management is terrible. Poor communications. Poor training, train after there is an error. Changing how things are done on a daily basis with little communication as to why or when.

    Advice to Management

Require classes on how to be an effective manager. Write procedure manuals and actually listen to the people who are doing the work. Also pay attention to turn over rates. Might be the manager not the people hired.

    I worked at NWEA full-time

    Pros

Great benefits, opportunity to work for non-profit dedicated to serving students. Free coffee and tea, discounted pop.

    Cons

Shockingly poor selection of Sr. VPs , VPs, and right on down the line. Favoritism of some of the worst employees is discouraging. Leadership's complete inability to connect with the next level down is well known. Employees are frequently unhappy with their manager, but stay on due to the benefits.

    Advice to Management

The new CEO cleaning house would be a great start to the new year. Find leadership that is confident and able to communicate. No more weirdos and incompetents who can't even return a good morning or manage their budget. HR's inability to make changes when problems are reported makes them useless. There are managers there that they've kept on just so they don't sue them, further poisoning the employee pool; get rid...
