I worked at NWEA for less than a year

    Pros

The QA team with which I worked consisted of extremely helpful and affable people. I really enjoyed working with all of them. The team lead is a dynamic, knowledgeable, and very helpful person. I liked her a great deal. The Senior developer is a wonderful person. Free instant oatmeal and really great hot chocolate. I would really like to have been an FTE employee.

    Cons

Constant restructuring resulted in my contract being cut short; two-and-a-half months of a six month contract. At least I got a weeks notice. Management is so disorganized as to be non-existent. The manager I reported to spoke with me twice: my second day where she told me that I could not work from home and sometime during my last week with a "thanks for your work" flavor. Parking in the building's garage is restricted...

    Advice to Management

Get your collective heads and butts wired together. Create a stable organization. Treat your contractors like people and NOT likened-person entities.

I have been working at NWEA full-time for more than 8 years

    Pros

NWEA has a great mission focused on kids and learning. Doesn't get much better than that. it is an organization filled with bright (and brilliant) caring professionals who want to do great work and make a difference in Education. It is a nice place to work and having worked for a number of companies that is a high compliment. Great benefits, amazing colleagues and competitive pay. It is an organization that strives to...

    Cons

At times there is a lack of focus because there are so many things the organization wants to achieve that at times it is like all the priorities are number 1 and this dilutes effectiveness and results. In the past there has been a fair amount of going after "bright shiny objects," but I can now say that the last two years or more the leadership has gotten focused and clearer on our strategies and goals. The current executive...

I worked at NWEA full-time for more than 5 years

    Pros

    * The work can be meaningful if you believe the hype (and ignore the lobbying that they do to try and win contracts) * There are interesting problems to solve if they would have the vision * Lots of opportunities if you are ambitious and good at your job * Can easily skate by if you are not ambitious

    Cons

    * Middle management has taken over via onerous process that provides no benefit * No trust in the engineers * Inability of upper management to make hard decisions as to the technical direction of the company * Inexperienced technical leadership that provides no leadership and deflects blame * Feels very much like bottom up leadership regarding technical direction and improvement * Questionable acquisitions over the...

    Advice to Management

To senior engineering management: * Adapt to the changing technical landscape if you want to get and keep highly skilled and motivated engineers. For example, move back towards devops and continuous delivery. * Fire the incompetent engineers and QA. * Focus on the department first and not all of the politics * Actually provide leadership -- currently no direction from upper management with very little interaction...
