I have been working at NY Health Department full-time (More than 3 years)

    Pros

Health benefits and pension are the best part of working here. Not much ability to grow professionally.

    Cons

Lack of team environment. Coaching needs to take place to help staff work better together.

    Advice to Management

Skills development for middle managers needed

I have been working at NY Health Department full-time (More than 3 years)

    Pros

A number of programs have national level significance. Strong support for continuing your education. Close relationship with the SUNY school of public health. People are generally nice.

    Cons

Oppressive bureaucracy even for a government agency. Getting a memo out can literally take months. Little if any promotion from within a position. You have to apply to other jobs in the agency to get anywhere. A frustrating environment if you want to advance by working hard. NYCDOHMH is much more dynamic.

    Advice to Management

Empower people at lower levels to make decisions. It shouldn't take over a year for a paper to be approved for journal submission. Those ubiquitous crazy delays hinder public health response and greatly reduce the visibility and relevance of the department's work.
