I have been working at NY SEFCU full-time (Less than a year)

    Pros

Hours, Pay, Benefits, Unlimited opportunity for advancement, volunteer opportunities, vacation time, the feeling you get when volunteering and helping the community

    Cons

The ever changing world of financial institutions and technology, wish something were easier to do with system, not as many volunteer opportunities if not in Albany

    Advice to Management

Give more opportunities to the employees not in the capital district

    No opinion of CEO

I worked at NY SEFCU full-time (More than 3 years)

    Pros

Free lunch daily if you worked at HQ, free lunch on Fridays at all other branch/office locations. Casual dress code. Decent health insurance. Full gym, meditation room, and sauna at HQ. Company paid holiday parties and other events. Give away's and decent PBT.

    Cons

Depending on what department you're in, micromanaging can be the death of you. Some people have little trust in their employees and feel the need to keep them on a tight leash constantly, which only causes resentment in the end. A lot of people there are "lifers" which can be a bad thing if you're trying to move up the ladder; you'll have to fight tooth and nail if a job opening outside of branch banking comes about. Also, a lot of politics there. Most of the time people are in their positions because of years of service, not necessarily because they're qualified for the position. The CEO tries to act like he's running some fun cultured Silicon Valley start-up, when in all reality its not, and that mainly has to do with direct management. They also stress how important work-life balance is, yet, once again, depending on which department you work in and who your manager is, it can either be great or horrible.

    Advice to Management

Stop micromanaging and put some trust in your employees. Listen when they have something to say and value their input more. There is nothing worse than harping on innovation and change, and then not being able to adapt to the ideas your own employees are trying to make happen.

    Pros

You don't need to try too hard

    Cons

Cronyism. Egocentric Management. They don't like thinkers.

    Advice to Management

Cultivate talent. The person you like is not always the best person for the job. You're going to lose talent with the way to treat people.

    Pros

Benefit package are excellent. There are a handful of great individuals that have great vision.

    Cons

This company puts on a good show for their members, but it is extremely broken internally. There is no diversity and the HR department is fueled by gossipping unprofessional group of individuals.
They want you to be a robot and do whatever it takes to please the members no matter how badly you are treated. They don't want you to educate members and work with them, instead discourage escalation and if escalation happens, you are on their "radar."
The organization is incestuous. Everyone is dating evereyone. People are supposed to be placed in different location for this purpose, but often are in the same building. This creates favortism and conflicts of interest.
The culture is toxic and as stated previoulsy, they throw everyone under the bus, documenting is a full time job. You will not be developed. They will ask you for a developmental plan that is never supported.
They don't hire leaders, they hire whom they like and as a result, there is a high turnover. You can be the worst at your job, but they keep you because they like you. You have people handling finances who have no formal education.
The organization lacks the right talent to bring the President's vision to fruition. Instead of getting talent, they recycle the negative people that feel entitled.

    Advice to Management

The president is a visionary and is a progressive thinker. No one embraces that in the branch level.

I worked at NY SEFCU full-time (More than 5 years)

    Pros

It was a good paying job while in college and afterwards during recession. I was fortunate to work with some great people at the branch level. Great benefits package.

    Cons

Lack of pay raises, after seven years my hourly rate only went up $3 overall with two promotions. Organizations values are admirable, but culture and atmosphere is keep your head down, do your job and document everything to defend yourself (just in case). You need to know the right person to get the job you want. Even if you're the best candidate you will be passed over.

    Advice to Management

Promote those with exemplary records, don't "reward" bad work ethics with back office positions.

I worked at NY SEFCU full-time (More than 3 years)

    Pros

Good pay, easy to get along with coworkers, company is always trying to build morale and have team building events. Generally a good place to work though if you can work with the cons

    Cons

If you do anything wrong, whoever finds it will email you and your manager, your managers manager and whoever else they could think of. It's kind of demotivating and unnecessary to tell half the company if one tiny thing is off.

ATM breaks often and they expect you to go down there and fix it any day, any time.

No bonuses or commission like at other banks. You reach your goal management tells you your goal must've been too low instead of rewarding you.

    Advice to Management

Spend time in the branches before making rules for the branches. Some of them just make no sense at all if you work in the actual environment.

    Pros

Excellent benefits, the employer values work life balance. More paid benefit time than you can use after 5 years of service.

    Cons

Change and improvements take a long time to analyze, review and put into action. Unclear directives from senior management to mid-senior level and below.

Very organized organization that is committed to the community and member service. I love the service we offer members as well as the opportunity to help and make a difference in the community.

    Cons

The opportunity to make more money is low.

    Pros

    Supportive Management Team
    Vast Opportunity
    Strong Community Involvement

This is a place where you have to thrive on taking accountability and ownership of your position. If you want to move up within the organization, you must know where you want to go, and be willing to accept the critique offered to you by your superiors. They provide a lot of incentives, and promote community involvement.

    Cons

This was the best job I have had, there aren't any cons worth mentioning... It is a challenging, fun atmosphere

    Pros

I enjoy knowing the members, Sefcu prides itself on that! Members love that we want to know them. They pay well for banking!

    Cons

It may sometimes be hard to deal with managers! They like to pass the buck instead of dealing with the issue.

    Advice to Management

Deal with issues at hand! When you don't you end up with a high turnover rate.
