I have been working at NYC Department of IT & Telecom (DOITT) full-time for more than 3 years

    Pros

-Great exposure to some cutting edge technology -When fellow employees band together in an emergency situation, the best in people shine through

    Cons

-Extremely bureaucratic, multiple layers of approval for outside agency projects while the outside agency waits, and waits -Efforts to tackle a problem across multiple teams/divisions is chaotic, trouble tickets get bounced around from group to group like a hot potato with an attitude of "not my problem", meanwhile a requesting agency with the issue is left in the dark -Low pay compared to other IT peers, even... among other agencies, we are paid among the lowest with zero discretionary salary increases

    Advice to Management

-Encourage cross team bonding and relationship building, if a DoITT employee is having trouble with one of their own projects or systems, it is close to hell to try and get assistance from another group for help -Reduce reliance on ITCS consultants and SI's. Big morale killer when you know someone is making more than double your hourly rate for doing the same work, and is trusted more than an FTE. -Establish... DoITT's presence in the City as the leading IT services provider for our peer agencies, and as such, we need to be staffed accordingly

    Negative Outlook

I have been working at NYC Department of IT & Telecom (DOITT) full-time for more than 3 years

    Pros

    Don't have to do much

    Cons

No opportunities for advancement or salary increases unless you're buddy-buddy with the management Extremely decentralized all in the name of "job creation", and the union loves it No competitive pay, basic benefits. If you complain about money, union rep will give you a spiel on how great government jobs are. Yea, didn't work out so well for Detroit.

I worked at NYC Department of IT & Telecom (DOITT)

    Pros

Steady paycheck - given the current recession - less chances of being laid off -but, that all depends who you work for. Just have the mentality .... Punch in and punch out.

    Cons

Lack of advancement - Low Pay - as other have said -it's municipal government - so don't expect much from management. The attitude of management "Don't like it - leave!!!" ...A middle ages type of mentality - so if you do decide to work here - broker as much money as you can before you join - there are no salary increases or advancement (very rare)

    Advice to Management

None - it's a system that has been in place for years with little change. If you are fortunate to work for a good manager than great- if not - you are on your own....
