    Negative Outlook

I worked at NYC Office of Emergency Management as an intern (Less than a year)

    Pros

    very laid back and relaxed

    Cons

NYC government is unbelievably counterproductive. Everything is very politically motivated, and people don't respect interns at all. Great on your resume if you want to do EM.

    Advice to Management

NYC government needs to change. The culture is not good with these government jobs. People can't get fired, so many people don't really care about much.

    Pros

Great learning experience. You have a chance to learn and gain a great amount of experience. Small agency. Executive staff care for all staff regardless of position and treat you like family.

    Cons

Although Executive staff is great some upper management needs a lot more experience and training on how to be managers.

    Advice to Management

really take the time to hear what the employees are having issues with. Don't just give someone a title without knowing how they truly function in that position or department.

    Neutral Outlook

I worked at NYC Office of Emergency Management full-time (More than 3 years)

    Pros

Great access to inner working of city government and agency heads. High visibility and loads of experience to be gained.

    Cons

Flat organization, suffers from group think, still operates like an office of the Mayor instead of an agency.

I have been working at NYC Office of Emergency Management as an intern (Less than a year)

    Pros

Dependent upon your unit placement, it is a fast paced opportunity to gain experience and contribute to the field of emergency management. If you put a lot of work into it you can reap many benefits.

    Cons

Due to the nature and time frame of work to be completed sometimes you are not given a ton of direction. However supervisors are more than happy to discuss projects with you if you run into issues.
