I have been working at NYC Office of Manegement and Budget (More than a year)

    Pros

Independence, great place to start, lots to learn, great co-workers, the people you work with really go out of the way to teach you

    Cons

Monotonous work at times. There are many administrative tasks that always need to be done. At times the level of bureaucracy is suffocating

    Advice to Management

Analysts end up doing large amount of grunt work, it would be nice if they were better appreciated.

I worked at NYC Office of Manegement and Budget full-time (More than 5 years)

    Pros

OMB has a very central place in the City's administration, and it is a fantastic place to learn and grow professionally. Promotion opportunities are good, and the staff is very talented.

    Cons

As a government agency, OMB sometimes has a somewhat rigid organizational structure, and a old-fashioned and somewhat inefficient vertical hierarchy. However, it compares favorably to other City agencies.

    Advice to Management

Hire a management consultant to look at ways to modernize the organizational structure. Promote more horizontal collaboration.

I have been working at NYC Office of Manegement and Budget full-time

    Pros

Depending on the unit you are in, you can meet some genuine people that have worked here for a long time. You will learn the basics of NYC budgeting, communication with other agencies and oversights.

    Cons

There has been a new wave of younger in experienced employees being promoted to higher level managerial positions. Sometimes it can be a be road in trying to work together with inexperienced people who are in a managerial position. Training isn't great, you'll have to keep on top of yourself to learn new systems and methods of reporting. If you intend to explore city budgeting, OMB is a place to break the surface before moving to the agency side. Sometimes when you see a vacancy listed, don't bother applying for an opportunity. Most of the time they have their ideal candidate chosen from within. They just go through the formal procedure to interview from outside.

    Advice to Management

Hire experienced managers who have hands on experience communicating and delegating work responsibilities.

    Pros

Work here for 10 years, get a pension. Or you can just stay until you die!

    Cons

    There is no leadership.
    There is no professional development.
You can only be fired for excessive pornography (I think).
    There are few windows.

    Advice to Management

    Retire.
