    Pros

Great people to work with. New technologies

    Cons

micromanage. Hopefully you don't get the same manager. Don't expect to get much when it comes to growth unless you are in the right department. Some groups expect you to work 24/7.

    Pros

Stellar scientists, every group leader at NYGC is crushing it. PIs are young, brilliant, and collaborative, cannot recommend them more.

    Cons

NYGC is as corporate as it gets: a perfect blend of demoralizing disingenuous corporate culture + the usual low academic pay. It wastes a lot of nonprofit money, raised in the name of science, on non-critical corporate staff who cannot care less about science. Just look up the top paid employee compensations in their public 990 tax forms. Administrative management does not understand how science works and does not respect scientists which can be extremely frustrating at times. Try starting a company out of NYGC, registering an IP, moving to or collaborating with another institution, each of those will involve months and months of unintelligent discussions with clueless HR, legal, tech transfer and other admin staff. I know multiple people who have foregone IP just to avoid dealing with whole NYGC ineptitude/greed/mess. If you like to do science because you enjoy the spirit of research institutes, NYGC is going to be one disillusioning experience. Do yourself a favor and get a job in any one of the actual research institutes or universities in the NYC area instead. If industry is your jam, join an actual company that has a vision and an outlook.

    Pros

Coworkers in the lab are great to work with every day, it's a good team. There is a really good work-life balance, which makes for a low-stress environment. Pay & benefits are pretty good for a non-profit.

    Cons

Commuting if you're not on the A/C/E or 1/2/3 trains.

I worked at NYGC full-time for more than a year

    Pros

Good facilities, good benefits, okay salaries.

    Cons

Horrible management. Most people in high level positions were promoted early on just because they were here to fill voids when the place was getting started. And they won’t leave because they can’t get similar titles/salaries anywhere else, they’re under-qualified and lack management skills. They’re the in-group who make decisions here but lack vision, strategy and any motivation to improve things. They’re happy with their titles & salaries and they make sure new employees aren’t a threat by refusing to allow them to advance. I’ve spoken to others who have worked here in the past and they said similar things. Any concerns brought to HR are not addressed.
