I worked at NYS Office Of Children & Family Services full-time (More than 3 years)

    Pros

Lots of training and support from supervisors. Open door policy for supervisors and management. Lots of overtime if you want it. The main pro is you are actually making a difference in the lives of children and families. There is job security because this job will always be needed!

    Cons

Some supervisors micro-manage you and pick favorites. Some employees get yelled at in front of their peers but certain supervisors and targeted. New upper management within the last year started to target certain employees. They tell you to hurry up but you make a mistake then you are punished because they put so much pressure on you.

    Advice to Management

Stop treating employees like children. Mistakes happen and you cannot threaten them with disciplinary actions for misspelling a word or clicking the wrong button. We are ALL human and deserved to be treated with respect and now allow management to yell at their staff.

I have been working at NYS Office Of Children & Family Services full-time (More than 5 years)

    Pros

Good state benefits, competitive salary, and the possibility of a state pension.

    Cons

The management believes everyone is disposable, they treat staff with no respect, and supervise from a punitive style with no true vision for professionally developing their staff

    Advice to Management

Upper administration needs the work toward improving the culture and climate of the agency

I worked at NYS Office Of Children & Family Services full-time (More than 8 years)

    Pros

OCFS has higher pay.The health benefits are very good. the work week is 37.5 hours a week for Community Service Team case managers. The work is VERY rewarding when the youth a families see you as an ally.

    Cons

Back-stabbing coworkers and supervisors are everywhere.Mission statement only applies to the families and youth that we are serving, not the employees.

    Advice to Management

Stop acting like you are trying to win a popularity contest. Do what is right for humanity, outside and INSIDE agency.

I have been working at NYS Office Of Children & Family Services full-time (More than a year)

    Pros

Staff- An amazing group of people to work with. With every job, especially in this field, knowing you have reliable coworkers whom assist each other and go the extra mile to make sure your all on the same page makes all the difference.

    Cons

    So short staffed.
Sadly, this job field is HIGH STRESS....Being able to manage work, & maintain a personal life outside is hard. The state needs to go back to implementing the old way of rules and policies.
Its hard for staff to stay when, they don't feel safe.

    Advice to Management

    Company values are important.
They are more then willing to listen and hear and see all sides to each story.

I worked at NYS Office Of Children & Family Services full-time (More than 5 years)

    Pros

No day was like the next when working with Juvenile offenders. Some rewarding days where you actually made headway with kids.

    Cons

No day was like the next. There is also a negative side to this a lot of your ability to be successful as an YDA came from through the Senior Counselors. So if their management was weak the usually the cottage was a well.

    Advice to Management

Leave more time for counselors just to be in the cottage. Not per-say working the floor but just merely as a presence, and more greatly a deterrent for poor behavior from the youthful offenders

    Pros

Having the opportunity to work with people who truly need our help.

    Cons

The state is a hierarchy which wants to look like it operates on an equal platform. The government forgets we all are working for the people of New York, not just the PEF and CSEA empoyees.
