Workplace can be political. Who you know will determine the level of progression

    Advice to Management

Flatten management hierarchy to allow potential/progression to be spotted

I worked at NYSE full-time (More than a year)

    Pros

A good place for IT specialists, developers and programmers
    Friendly culture. Central Belfast office

    Cons

American management very hierarchical, hero worship of CEO encouraged.
Obsequiousness rather than the skilled and experienced staff are rewarded.
Some departments run more like fiefdoms than democracies.
For example the line manager actually uttered the gem: "you are paid to do, not to think".
Why hire people with degrees, if this is the case?
Many worried and demoralised by upcoming ICE merger.

    Advice to Management

Promote existing skilled staff. Root out managers that are known to bully

    Pros

Team level - excellent. Great group with some very smart people
Flexible working - as long as core hours are covered, and the freedom isn't exploited
    Very good benefit package
Always busy - never going to be bored due to lack of work

    Cons

VP title given out far too freely - too many grand titles for doing the same work that their subordinates do.
No career progression unless you can talk the talk, not walk the walk.
Money is below industry standard, even in Northern Ireland

    Advice to Management

Offer better training and a career progression path

    Pros

The money isnt too bad for belfast, and the team i work in is a good team. at a team level im happy

    Cons

The company doesnt seem interested in keeping its best people some of the other teams are not very helpful. Internal politics seems to play a bigger part than previously.

    Advice to Management

While a hero culture isnt maintainable you need to keep the best of your staff. Putting staff out in an area where they are exposed to other companies that will pay much more for them and not adjusting salaries etc is not smart.
